One of my red male guppies is swimming with his head to the top of the water and his tail straight down...

His gills look redder then the rest of the fish.

I do NOT have a test kit yet.

What could it be?:confused::help:

It could be ammonia poisoning which does cause reddening of the gills, and makes the fish gasp for air.

Try doing an immediate 50% water change, make sure your filter is agitating the surface of the water, and if you have one, add a bubblestone.

Also, get an API testng kit asap. It is an essential part of kit if you are keeping fish.

Nvm

He died.

What are some good brand test kits from petco?

API OK. imma see if my local stores carry it.

One of my pregnant(bought her pregnant) guppies just died randomly. that makes 2 today.

Im pretty angry right now both at myself and the false information given to me by my dad.

I knew about all of the fish tanks he had in his past and assumed this meant he knew what he was talking about.

Well we all know what assuming does.

I didint let the tank cycle like i was told by MANY experienced people on here and followed the instructions given to me by someone who obviously doesnt have a clue.

I asked him about the nitrogen cycle and he claimed to know about it.
I asked if i should trigger it by adding food to the tank to slowly build up ammonia and then test the tank with a test kit.. he said that was definitely not needed, and that they are really easy to care for.

Im furious.:angryfire::angryfire: Oh and to make matters worse when i told him about it he said i "play with the tank too much"

Yea... by playing with the tank i guess he meant doing a water change after fish died?!?

Then i said"well i think i added fish too soon" and he still says i didint add fish too soon.

I told him and my brother NOT to get me fish for my bday that i wanted to get them and pick them out sure enough they walked in on DEC 6th with a bag of 8 male guppies and some bulbs and etc they bought them all from WALMART ... i wouldve atleast gotten them from Petco... not walmart.:headshake2: And i wanted to cycle the tank...

My next step is obviously to buy that test kit.

Any other suggestions?
