Clean-up crews eating dead things.

I'm planning on setting up my 29 gal. tank to be as self-ran as possible. I take a lot of business trips out of state and am often gone for a few days at a time. I plan to set up an aquafuge to help lower nitrates and work as a natural food supply for the fish and possibly corals. I'm going to replace the contents of my cannister filter with LR rubble. I also plan to have a very efficient clean-up crew. The one thing I'm still not sure about is what if something dies while I'm gone. If a snail, crab, fish, or something died in the tank and I was not here to remove it, would the clean-up crew eat/dispose of it?

They could. I once had a chromis die and before I even saw it was not swimming around, 2 hermits managed to devour it. Same with a maroon clown my 2 others decided to kill within a 10 minute time period.

Hermit crabs will definitely eat anything that dies in your tank, esp the blue legged ones. A few of mine devoured a large dead turbo snail in less than 24 hours. They are good to have around.

They'll also eat things that are still alive. :lipssealedsmilie:

indeed, like live turbo snails, other crabs, inverts, corals, fish, pretty much can be spawns of Satan.

All depends on your clean up crew. I'd still advise on having a tank sitter come at least every other day. Just to be sure nothing odd had occured (electrical, plumbing, etc.)

I would if I could, but I'm currently living in a small town full of drunks and other non-responsible people. Letting anyone that lives within 50 miles of here near my tank would certainly be a disaster. There is basically nobody with saltwater tanks up here. There was 1 guy about 5 years ago that had a 55 gal. w/ a lionfish in it. Some people that he had at his house kept feeding it the feeder fish one after another until it died. I would be pissed if that happened to me.
