I recently finished converting my 4 footer from a planted community tank into a rocky tang tank. Getting all the old sand out was a real pain but it paid off in the end. Substrate is crushed limestone, rocks are dead coral and the current inahbitants are a pair of adult Bristlenose's, a Pictus Catfish and five Julidochromis transcriptus. I'm getting more cichlids soon and I'll post more pics when I do.

Really nice rock layout, I am too attached to plants but I would love to keep tangs sometime. Such interesting and great looking little guys. Excellent clean pics.

Being a fresh water keeper I really liked the before pictures. That was a nice tank. Good luck with the new set-up.

Thanks all.

Yeah I liked the tank before too, it was really hard to sell all the fish but I wanted to give african cichlids a go. Ideally I would have liked to have just bought another tank but 5 tanks is already too many (as my parents keep telling me :)). Also it appears 2 of the Julies have formed a pair; plenty of displaying, quivering, mouth fighting and chasing going on. They're just so great to watch.

My Mum should be picking up 3 Black Calvus today so I'll post pics of them when they're settled.

Very very very very nice looking julies and rockwork...I wish you many broods of fry. Believe me, it doesnt take much to get em going. Got my first batch after only a month :)

Thanks jpappy.
I just love their blue eyes and at feeding time they all school together to feed, too darn cute.

I love it when my male flares at my multi male. Their fins are so elegant and their eyes, yes, are beautiful!

Tanganyikan cichlids are freshwater fish. :) They come from one of the Rift Lakes in Africa.

If you dont mind me asking...I was wondering what type of rock you are using...I have some texas holey rock but that stuff is so dang expensive and I need more rockwork

Thanks everyone.
Its dead coral rock (dead live rock) that I was able to collect off the beach for free, one of the perks of living near a reef :). It was all above the high tide mark, nicely bleached and smoothed off. I looked at buying rock but like you said its sooooo expensive to get a decent amount so I just took the time to collect my own, all legal of course. I think dead live rock is cheaper than holey rock and some others.

Here are some pics of the 3 Black Calvus I got, bit skinny and knocked around but they're conditioning up nicely. I call them the Calies, awesome fish they change colour at the drop of a hat.

The two feuding families the Julies and the Calies fighting for dominance on the Tanganyikan shoreline (Romeo & Juliet). No seriously :grinyes: the calvus and the julies get on great.
