Hi,

I have the Eclipse 37 with the size "H" Marineland filter. I have been out of an initial take cycle for about 2-3 weeks. My filter does have noticeable debris and what not on it. I have 4 filters as extras. My question is I have read on sites that people will rinse the filter in tank water (out of the tank) and put it back. Since my tank is so new, would this be a good idea since I might lose too many bacteria colonies? Regarding my bio-wheel, I know I don't ever have to replace it, but should I clean it ever, and how would I clean it since that is the main source of bacteria cultures?

Thanks!

I think you'd only clean your wheel if it's too gunked up to turn. It doesn't have to turn very quickly, but as long as it's turning, then the bacteria are staying wet, and getting plenty of oxygen and all is well.

As for how to clean it, I think you just shake it around in some tank water. If the little tracks it sits in are gunked up, you could probably use a little brush to clean those.

As you noted, your biowheel should be the main bacteria culture, but if your filter pad is accumulating debris, you could shake it off in tank water, and I don't think that would hurt anything.
