View Full Version : Putting ballasts under the tank?

Right now my AHSupply ballasts are in my vented lighting hood and are, I believe, contributing to my temperature problems. I would like a tank at 25*C and get from 26-28*, peaking late afternoon. Clearly the lights are heating my 75g tank and I am wondering if I should install a hood fan and/or move the ballasts into the cabinet below.

I once read about putting the ballasts on the underside of the cabinet top which would provide some extra warmth for the substrate and plant roots. This sounds good, since it is primarily a plant tank that has fish, but maybe I get the same overall rise in temperature I am trying to avoid.

Installing the fan first makes sense, if I can find a seriously quiet one (Radio Shack?). Thoughts?

You could just put a fan on a stool or something and aim it into the lights.

I actually have a hood light where the ballast is near the plug end like a power brick. It should be no problem to wire things up like that if you wanted to.

I have always installed my ballasts in the stand, even flourescent ballasts.
