I have been using R/O water on my 75 gallon tank, but this filter takes all night to get even 8 gallons of water. My local fish store guy tells me that 90% of his customers use either straight tap or just a carbon filter. Would I be better off making larger and more frequent water changes without the RO?

Thanks

IMHO you are much better off using the RO filter. Many times the problem with RO filter performance is due to poor water pressure. The only solution I can think of is to add a pump( I forget the name/type) to your RO filter to increase the water pressure entering the unit. You could alos try hooking it up to a faucet where you will normally have higher water pressure.

I used tap water to fill my 125 gallon tank, and it was the biggest mistake of my aquarium career.

I used a dechlorinator but I had algea problems for months. After I got an RO/DI unit that made 100gpd and did several major water changes, most of my problems went away.

If your RO is that slow, I assume it's a drinking water RO system, hooked up to your sink? Think about buying a 50 or 100 gallon per day unit. I can make about 1 gallon every 15 minutes with my 100gpd unit buy Aqua FX.

We sell them on our website for 150 or 180, depending on the 50 or 100gpd unit.

But whatever you decide, don't use tap water. You will be sorry.

Be careful generalising about tap water. It depends on where you live and what the water quality is in your area.

I agree with a_free_bird73 .

I use tap water in al my tanks. That is 3 different counties, 8 different cities. I do not have a problem from the tap water.
