I have a few dozen ghost shrimp in my 5g that i wanna make into a cherry breeder. But anyhow.

One of my shrimp has a white to tan worm inside of him i think. I dont stare long enough to watch it move, but it moves around his organs and rearranges. eeeewww. anybody?

And some of my ghost shrimp look like there powdery. like you took em out and painted em just a few times with white paint. the snails in the tank are doin fine. no shell problems. empty snail shells (from the crayfish) are kinda deteriating slowly. anybody?

I've heard stories on this forum of other peoples ghost shrimp turning a white-ish color and soon after they die...

Mine turned white about two or three weeks ago and now I can not find them in my tank...

So in conclusion, I think you can assume that once they turn white, they are going to die soon.

Anyone agree or disagree?

theyve been like that for about 2 weeks now. joelax28 do you know how long they said it took to die? or anything about the worm thing?

i wanted to add that the worm thing has been on just the one shrimp and its been about a month now? and shes about full grown. healthy color.

nice thread. but so does iodine work?

If my crayfish has molted several time in the 5g tank the shrimp are in, shouldnt it be ok for them also?

alotta people viewing.... no help...

com on its my precious 12 for 1.25 shrimp lol

Im just curious folks.

The shrimp may just be molting or dying. The times that I've had ghost shrimp die, they've turned VERY white. The shredded skin can also be very white.

Absolutely no clue about the worm or whatever. I'll take a look at the couple I have in my 10gallon tank tonight and see if I can see anything similar.

its a pretty long worm thing. wraps all around the inside of the shrimp and like i said it moves! on time it will be pointed at the tail. then curling back. then up at the head. all the while the main part is wrapped around the organs. man i need a camera.

Do you have pictures of the worm? Ghost Shrimp are clear so their digestive track is often visible, showing whatever color food you are feeding and you will sometimes see that move around inside them.

You should PROBABLY quarantine that shrimp. If it is a parasitic worm and is similar in behavior to ones found in humans, they can easily spread to all your other shrimp and possibly your fish. I don't think worms will be able to last long outside of a host. But the water in the tank may keep them alive long enough to find a host. You may want to do a water change. Keep in mind that I'm not expert. I'm just thinking back to my parasitic diseases class.
