better picture of the *supposed* female
thanks!
Your second pic looks like a male to me. Most breeding on neons was done without any intention on the part of the owner. I've read about this but I can't remember the reference.

you'll need soft water and a pretty sizable school. neons are egg scatterers, and will eat their eggs. it can be difficult to raise the fry because they are so small.

would distilled water result for spawning??
That is a male cardinal (I expect, mature females have a much rounder belly) , yeah very soft acidic water, 3 dH ph of 6.5. The eggs and fry need low light, the only time I had them breed was when the water was peat stained with a temperature of 75F. Neons and cardinals have similar breeding requirements, live foods help to get them into breeding condition. They lay eggs among soft plants or a spawning mop. The eggs and fry need very good water conditions to survive, and they are not so easy to feed and grow quite slowly.

The picture shows the red coloration only covers the rear part.

I have never bred neons, but I would assume that you would need water with a low pH and hardness and probably peat filtered. Good luck!

Why breed neons? You can get them anywhere. Plus they are cheap and not very hardy.

That was a general statement. They may not be hardy to others but it is possible in many cases that they are.;)
