View Full Version : thinking about getting fiddler crabs

My daughter really wants a crab. But I am having trouble finding good solid information on them. I know they need access to "land" as well as water. I have read conflicting reports if they are freswater or brackish. As well as if they can go with fish. What we would like to do is set up a 10 gallon for them. I have a tower that they can climb to have access to a dry area. I am going to make a platform from a plasic tray for them. It will be over half the size of the tank footprint. Allowing room at the end for the filter. I thought I would fill the tray with sand for them. I was planning on leaving the water level a little low so they cannot climb out, plus have it covered very well. So even though it is a 10 gallon it will probably only have 8 gallons of water. Does this set up sound good? What kind of water do they really need? Can I add fish with them? What and how do I feed them? Can I get more than one? And anything else you think I need to know.

Oh yeah, would one of those blue crayfish be better?

Thanks for the help. Want to do this right.

10 gallons is too small for most crayfish, so scratch that idea unless you want a dwarf species, which is sometimes hard to find. Fiddler crabs should be brackish, but I've heard of them acclimated to freshwater. They may have a shorter lifespan in freshwater though. There are other forums where I've skimmed some material on people keeping crabs. Try Aquarium Advice.
