columbus, oh
as i mentioned, we have a 40 gallon breeder that we want to get up and running. we have an idea and wanted your input. the list is as follows:

2 blood parrot cichlids
a green severum
common pleco
pictus cat

eventually we will move this list to a 125 gallon when we move to California next year, but we plan on getting the cichlids as babies. let us know what you think.

Common plecos require a 100 gallons and over.
Pterygoplichthys pardalis-18" max
Hypostomus plecostomus-22" and over

I'd ditch the blood parrots and keep only the severum with some giant danios.

How many giant danios would go well in that space?

i don't want giant danio's. i was wondering if the list i came up with will outgrow the 40 breeder within a year if the cichlids were purchased at less than 3"? like i said, next year they will be moved to a 125 gallon.

I'd rather not have the blood parrots if you are getting a new tank next year.

what's so bad about the blood parrots, they are what she wants most and we already have the pleco and the pictus cat.

Behavior: Unpredictable..You don't know when it will behave differently.
Size: 20-25 cm..Pretty big actually.

It's your choice however. The sev can reach 8 inches thus making the tank look cramped when mixed with blood parrots. Nothing wrong with them. It's the size that matters here since you mentioned getting your tank in a year.

I think they are asking the rate of growth of the blood parrots and sevrum as well as compatibility. For example, I was told not to get green cory's for my 10 gal because they get much larger than some of the other corys. My plan was to 'upsize' later and their slow rate of growth was perfect until I moved them to the 29 gal the following year. This plan never would have worked with the 'Walmart Pacu' that rapidly outgrows every smaller tank.

How fast do the parrots and sevrums grow?

What about the pictus? Will there be problems with the sevrum? I was adviced not to mix my pictus with Africans but I don't remember seeing anything about SA cichlids.

we may just end up waiting until we get out to california and get our 125 befre we get them, i think we will just put our goldfish in their instead. i would still like to know the answers to drdud's post though, very good questions.

they will out grow it in a year a year is a very long time oscars go from 1" to 12" in a year. wait untill you move or get them a couple of months before you move.
