I have a 20G with just 5 neons and an apple snail. I would really like to breed some kirbs in there. Will that be possible? I can move the neons. How many kirbs? What should the ratio of males to females be? should it be a rocky set up? Or a planted set up? They seem like a really intresting fish that would be a fun challenge to breed and raise the fry.

Kribs do best as a single pair. They need a dither which your neons could become but I'm not sure the snail would make it. Kribs are very passive and easy until they set up shop. When ready to breed, a 20 is just big enough if there are plenty of plants for cover. The neons will probably be alright but the snail can't swim away and hide so I would doubt its chances to survive.

I used to keep a pair of kribs in a 20 gallon. definetely move the snail, it will be very likely be killed (I know from experience) they would probably appreciate some plants and also an adequate amount of rockwork and caves. they can be pretty aggressive towards each other, so plants and rockwork are good for cover

Just considering my options, but are there any other cichlids i could breed in that set-up?

blue rams, bolivian rams, apistos... there are plenty fish you could breed, just make sure you research their requirements first

So do i just get 1 male and 1 female, and they will most likely breed. Or will i have to get more and see if any pair off and then remove the rest? How mnay times will they have offspring a year. Sorry this may seem as a dumb question but i dont actualy know.

If large enough to sex correctly, see if the pair that you will be getting is compatible, if not, maybe try another female or male. If juveniles, get 6 and let them pair up on their own, as you don't know if you get two males or two females (or if lucky enough, a pair).

They are supposed to spawn every 4 weeks, generally...

The males and females are very easy to tell apart. the male is more torpedo shaped and not as colorful. The female has a red belly and has more vibrant colored fins its belly is rounder. I had a pair of Kribs in a 20 gallon. Ive heard they are pretty easy to breed compared to other species. I rearranged my stocking before they had the chance though.

yeah my kribs are so obviously male and female. The female has a really round red belly and they swim around together. I made a krib breeding house with a flowerpot with a bit missin out of it. i believe a 50 gallon with quite alot of plants is enough room for the angels+glass catties to get away.

Well i went to my LFS and they only had males. They said they dont get nearly as many females as males in a delivery and that they usualy go fast, i was told to come back in the new year, probably around the 6th and see if they got any. For now, the snail and tetras can enjoy a 20G all to themselves.
