is it ok to drill the bottom of a 29 gallon all-glass aquarium? it doesnt have a sticker that says its tempered. have any of you done this with sucess?

To check whether its tempered or not, get a pair of polarised sunglasses on and look at the bottom pane of glass in bright daylight...if its tempered, you will see gray blobs in a pattern through-out the entire pane...

If its not tempered, then there is no problems at all with drilling it..

What's the story with tempered, is that the glass that shatters into a million little pieces if it breaks?

Yep...it will near enough shatter instantly when you start to drill through it...

Here is a pic of what happens when you attempt to drill a tempered glass tank..

Yes, on tanks that contain tempered glass, the bottom is usually the most likely to be tempered, and when new, "should" contain a sticker that states its tempered on each pane that is..

Just want to throw in that, although you can drill the bottom of your tank and it can work, drilling the side/back would be a better idea. If the back of your tank cracks, you've got a chance that it will crack in such a way that your tank will still hold enough water that your livestock can survive long enough fro your to get them into another tank, while if the bottom cracks, it's bye bye nemo. The bottom is also more likely to crack, and more likely to crack in a way that your water will drain out quickly, due to the weight on it.

almost 100% of all glass aquarium tanks have this type of glass on the bottom.. Just FYI :)

thanks all! back sounds like a better choice to me. now for location i was thinking top center of the back. my bulkhead is 1'' with 3/4'' pvc piping, and im using an aquaclear 70 which i used as a return for my old cpr overflow(600gph). for extra flow ill use a maxijet 1200. does that seem like all around good flow for a 29g reef?
