Okay, these two little guys or gals I got out of a tank labeled "Miscellaneous African Cichlids" and it said they get to about 4.5". Looking at pics online, I think they resemble the Neolamprologus Leleupi most to me. What do you all think?

No. Leleupi are Tanganyikan cichlids.

You have a Metriaclima Greshakei (Ice Blue Zebra) and a Metriaclima Estherae (Red Zebra). They are mbuna from Lake Malawi.

Oh very cool, thank you so much! So does this mean I need a new tank to set up a Malawi community? Oh gee darn. LOL :lol2:

Yep, Mbuna. They'll need a tank larger than 28g. ;)

Oh yes, we're actually keeping a watch on craigslist all the time to try and pick up a couple more tanks. We want a 75 and something huge, around 200, it's just a matter of time! :grinyes: I want to put my GSP in a 75 and we'll put just cichlids in a BIG tank.

Right now they're just about an inch long, how long does it take them to grow?

well if you feed your fishes with a higher protein food they grow faster but are prone to malawi bloat. if you feed your fishes spirulina or other high vegetable content and colour enhancer foods they will get better color but grow slower.
a year to get to 5-6"

Gah...... LUCKY!!! My folks insist that I can't setup another tank so long as I'm living here, and I can't upgrade the size of the current one. I would LOVE to get a 90g tank.... but my parents simply won't have it. :angryfire: I could theoretically get more tanks when I move into an apartment, possibly as soon as summer, but most nowadays seem to have a limit as to how big and how many tanks anyway. :wall:

maybe try leasing a house instead of moving into an apartment. I don't know where you are, but here, you can find homes for lease in the same range as a lot of the apartments (decent ones anyway) and you get more space in a house usually. If you're leasing from an individual, you can probably get them to give you more leniency on tanks.

Also, if you want to buy a house, this is really a buyer's market, ya know.

I wish I had the money to put down on a house... I'm 21 and working for basically $14/hr at a hospital to try to pay my bills and pay off my credit card. Leasing a home isn't a bad idea though... I know several people who have done that. Perhaps its an alternative to consider... If so, I'm so getting a 125 for my discus and making my 55 into a reef. :D

My apartments don't care about aquariums....They treat them like folks who have water beds. We just have to have a minimum 10,000 coverage for renter's insurance for anything over 10gallons. I have 100,000. Only about 180 a year for that coverage if I recall correctly. I have a 55 and a 100. I just recently gave my Eclipse 10 gallon to a close friend.

Do you live in a downstairs apartment? Do you contact a contractor or get the blueprints to the complex to figure out where you can place 1000 lbs of weight?

Too bad there isn't a tank stand out there that can catch all the water from a tank should it spring a leak.
