I'm of to the LFS tomorrow after getting a cap put on the pick up to replace the eheim today. I won't be tossing the eheim, rather with the help of blue, I will be using this one as a back up after I order the gasket and now clips that I broke. I'd like to get something of similar quality if possible but that might be a bit easier to deal with. Anyone have any suggestions? XP3? Fluval?

I personally love my XP3, even though the darn thing can be a pain to fire up sometimes. It'll get a little bubble trapped in it and not want to start, but I've found a near sure-fire way to get it going again. I just unplug it, close the flow valve on the spraybar, plug it back in, and as soon as the impellar hits water again, open the flow valve. Its a minor annoyance, but I still love it. Great little filter. I haven't got a whole lot of experience with the fluval canisters... dealt with a 304 at work a few times (back when I worked for petsmart) but that's it. I do like how easy the XP3 is to break down... pop the latches, grab the handles on the trays, and away you go.

I really like my XP filters. They are very easy to clean and very quiet in operation. I've never owned a Fluval or an Eheim so I can't really compare. When I find something that I like I stick with it rather than try other things that might be just as good. You will find threads where the Eheim and the Fluval fans are just as enthusiastic.

I have a few Fluvals that have been handed down to me, they have to be going on 15 years old. They work well but are a serious pain to get primed and clean. I have a pair of XP2s running on my parents tank which seem to be working very well, except somehow they seem to spit out air bubbles every few minutes....not really sure where they come from. The next canister I buy will probably be a Rena. I'd love to get an Eheim but don't have that kind of money to blow right now.

I have to give the xp's my vote too. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to use, and quiet. My only complaint is that the intake tube is blue which I find unsightly.

Agreed about the blue intake, kind of dumb IMO, but nothing a can of Krylon fusion can't fix.

Wont cost you much more to just purchase some new tubing ...

well, I finally have the XP3 up and runnng and all looks good for now. As far as the eheim, I think I know what the problem was.... of course, I had the o-ring placed wrong. *sigh* so now I have the eheim for back up.

Haha... my XP3 burps up the occasional fine mist of bubbles... no idea how they get in. I used to think it was something to do with the seal around where the power cable connects to the filter, but I'm not so sure anymore...

EHIEM prof series...i have the 2026 and i have tried 3 different canisters...and this one was the FAR easier to set up and to maintain...it also has a flow ball on it telling you when to change the media...and all you have to do is pull a lever and it releases the hoses without one drop...undo the clips...grab the handles on the baskets...and your done. it is soooooooooooooo fast and easy...starting it..just push the button 3 times..and it does everything else for you. its my silent fat lazy man canister that i am in love with...in fact im throwing all of my other canisters or selling them and moving to all eheim 2026s.....thats how much i love them and how easy they are...my fav feature? the flow ball that tells me when to do maintaince. its awesome...i just wish it would wipe my crack! LOL im just kidding!

Yeah I've heard this from a few people. I'm not sure where the come from either, but it doesn't bother my parents, or me since I hardly ever see the tank. The only time I could see it being problematic is if you were injecting CO2, and even that probably wouldn't be that big a deal.

I used an Eheim 2217 on a customer's 75 gal. With the in-line quick-connects and valves, there's never an issue with cleaning or priming. I use Eheim and magnum on my 125 discus tank. Don't have a problem with either.

I have a 72 gallon and have never used canister filters. I have a Emporer Penguin 280 and a 400 on it. Are canister filters really that much better?

Sploke

Many people like them because they can be hidden underneath the tank instead of hanging on the back in sight. They can also be quieter, and don't gas off CO2 in the case of a planted, injected tank.

O ok cool. Well my 72 gallon is on a modified built in bookcase so there is not any where below the tank I could put one.

I have fluvas for both of my tanks. No complaints, easy startup and easy to clean.

I have a fluval on my 45 and have had no problems at all despite many people telling me they stink. To the one person who told me to wait 6 months and tell me it isn't broken.... It isn't broken.

ScottyNorq: You asked "I have a 72 gallon and have never used canister filters. I have a Emporer Penguin 280 and a 400 on it. Are canister filters really that much better?"
I use mostly canisters and I like them. I also have an Emperor 280 on one of my tanks. The real advantage of the canister is that my wife can't stand the flow noise of the 280. If I keep the tank real full I don't hear about it from her too much but I never hear a word about noise from the canisters. The canisters allow me to keep my tanks in the family room instead of some back bedroom.
