Sorry this is long! ETA: I couldn't decide whether to put this in general freshwater or here, but I went with here since I seem to have mostly cichlid questions in here. ;)
So we've picked up a 75 gallon tank tonight to add to the collection. It's been a planted tank and it's got really nice lights and the guy gave us all the plants and substrate and everything. Now I'm trying to figure out what to do with it.
I know my Jewels & the two Mbuna I have need to be in a larger tank, but they won't do well with plants. Right now, I have my community fish in a 110. The 110 doesn't have that great of a light right now. It's got a sandy bottom that my corys love though. If I swapped the light fixtures, the 110 would be great planted and I could just leave my community fish there and move the cichlids into the 75. I am leaning towards this because I want a couple of Kissing Gouramis and I know they probably can't fit into the 75.
Or I could just replant the 75 as it was set up and move all my community fish into it. BUT, as for the cichlids, I know now that the Jewels and Mbuna really aren't compatibl, plus, two of my Jewels have spawned and are now in the 28 guarding their eggs. I moved the other 2 out along with the 2 Mbuna into a 10 with the convict fry as a temporary thing to get them out away from the new parents to hopefully give them a chance to hatch their babies and keep the babies alive. The convict fry are large enough now they seem to be holding their own at the moment. Plus I have lots of little caves in there. But this is strictly temporary.
I don't think I should move the mommy and daddy Jewels now, so they'll all stay in the 28 for a while. Should I put the other two Jewels and the two little Mbuna into the 75 together for now? They all seem to be doing fine in my water as is and seem to get along fine and even sortof hang out together. My PH is usually around 7.4 or so and the Alkalinity is high and the water is very soft.
If I do put those 4 in the 75, and give them lots of caves and stuff, will they be okay and what else can I put in there with them? What other types of cichlids?
Or should I put the plants and community in the 75 and give the cichlids the 110 and if so, what can I put in there with them? Would it be okay then to have a couple of kissing gouramis in a 75 along with the others? And what about my clown loaches? Should they stay in the 75 with the community as long as they're small and then move them in with the cichlids once they're big?
Tell me what to do! And I still have a GSP I need to move into a bigger tank sometime soon. But he'll be alright in the 29 long for now, I guess. I thought about putting HIM in the 75 and making it brackish and maybe I could get another puffer to go with him, but I think I need to move my cichlids around before I worry about him.
We're rapidly becoming a crazy fish house over here. My friend says she feels like she's at the dentist's office when she's in my house. LOL :headbang2:
