Hi,

I have a 75 gallon tank with common gravel from petsmart? Good enough for cories?

Thanks,

i use "normal" gravel in my tank with cories and they do fine as long as its not sharp or very large.

I'm not sure what you mean by "common gravel." How big is a piece? Pea sized? Tiny? Corys do best with as fine a gravel as you can find, and nothing sharp.

As long as the gravel is smooth it should be fine provided it's not too deep and you vacuum it regularly. I've given up on sand after my 6 Corydoras similis, plus a baby Brochis, died within 6 days of each other (the only Corys I've lost apart from a couple of pygmaeus), and now only use gravel for Corys.

by "common" I mean the stuff sold by the ton at Petsmart--some of the pieces are pointed on some sides....

I want something black to show off my cardinals and can't seem to find anything that is rounded.

What's wrong with black gravel??

Just so long as none of it is pointy enough to damage noses, or sharp edged enough to scratch them up. It's a sad thing to see a cory with half his barbs rubbed off on sharp stone.

I had the natural colored for a while, they didn't mind. Liked the sand alot better.

i like the black color--it sort of shows off the cardinals...it's just that some of the gravel at the store seems rounded, but none of those bags have black gravel....

so if I have a problem, I'll notice cories with missing barbels...otherwise, they're fine?

Not an issue for mine.

I kept them with the Petsmart gravel along with kuhlii's and did not have a problem with either ones and the kuhlii's burried themselves in it. I never seen any injuries on my 6 corys or my kuhlii loaches

I was facing this problem myself actually. I simply decided to replace my gravel with sand, since I have had my gravel for about 3 years and was getting boring.

i use gravel now and the cories sometimes rub against it violently. there are no sharp edges but i think it is just rougher on them in general. when i used sand they seemed pretty happy and schooled nicely. they were out all day as well, and i didnt have to feed them to see them.
