I have a 5 gallon tank i plan on keeping a couple (2) dwarf puffers in. I have a decent snail population in there already, tank is cycled, and i even have an oto in there who may or may not stay depending on how the puffers treat him. However now that the tank is ready i came to the flaw in my plan.....i dont know where to get them. The petsmart by my house has a tag but they dont have any in (and im weary about buying from there). I've heard wal mart has them but the one i went to doesnt. And all my GOOD regular fish stores dont have them in. So im wondering what the best course of action would be. (order online? check another wal mart? wait for petsmart? special order from good lfs?)

I've seen them at the Petsmart near my house several times and they always look like they're in pretty good condition. Otherwise, I'd either order online or if you have one lfs you deal with a lot and get a good deal at, see if they'll order you a couple. They will probably work out a reasonable price with you.

I have a figure 8 and a GS myself. They're probably the most fun to watch fish I have.

Good luck with them!

Are F8 puffers brackish? For that matter I thought most puffers were either brackish or salt, not truely freshwater.

dwarfs are true freshwater, i've always been fasinated by puffers, so it works out well that the only freshwater type is the only kinda i have tank space for. The lfs i deal with most said they'd request them, but it was out of their control weither or not the supplier has them in to send. So i'll just continue to check petsmart and them i suppose. Anyone know how often petsmart gets in fish?

Manix, yep, F8's are indeed brackish, as are GS. The dwarf puffs can stay in fresh from what I understand.

Ryan, our Petsmart, as well as the lfs I use the most around here both get in new fish on Thursdays.

Hope that helps!

dwarf puffers are indeed FW, but they are not the only true FW puffers. Colomesus asellus (aka South American, Peruvian, Brazilian FW etc) is also true FW and will stay relatively small (around 4" i am led to believe). the Mbu is a freshwater puffer, but not in a 10 gallon :) as is the Fahaka (see previous caveat).

there are also other, smaller FW puffers available through the average LFS...

No matter how cheap they seem don't get them from WalMart. They feed them flakes only, so I am sure that lead to the quick downfall of my pair as puffer just plain won't eat flakes!
