Altolamprologus calvus or altolamprologus compressiceps would be compatible, what size tank will (or are) the frontosas in?

Fronts don't grow like oscars(not half inch a week, more like half inch a month.), but it all depends on their food supply. you can keep some smaller tangijians untill he gets bigger, also only get 1 frontosa.

You do not want to deal with two gravel movers constnaly bikkering over teritory, You could also put haps, or maybe peacocks. The peacocks have more variety and color, oh and watch out the Frontosa will eat anyone he can swallow even if he doesn't look hungry, they are Night stalkers.

I don't recommend mixing Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika cichlids altogether.

Fish should always be purchased with their full grown size in mind. a 1" fish which maxes out at over 10 inches requires a larger tank. 6ft/1.8m tank length recommended with this species.

It's typically not advised to keep african cichlids from different lakes together, however I've had no problems keeping Lake Tanganyika frontosa's with Lake Malawi hap species, especially since they have identical dietary needs. These two below grew up together since they were tiny juvies (now 8"+):

In a large enought tank however, an all-frontosa tank would be most impressive, so non-frontosa tank mates aren't required.

Adding malawi haps can work, but not always (so Ill just say it's a risk).
