A couple of days ago, my much loved oranda died. The sad story is in my blog so I won't go over it again

I bought my pleco at the same time as my oranda so I've had him for 3 years also. He's always avoided me. Tonight when I stuck my hand in to get the zucchini out, he swam over to my arm. Then he moved a little closer. Then he swam to my fingers and started to suck on each one! I was expecting a bite or something, but it was just a soft feathery feeling.

I know I'm "humanizing" the whole event, he probably was just over anxious at the thought of a fresh zucchini. It's just he's never come over to me before, it kinda made me cry a little because I miss my big old ugly oranda, and the pleco's tiiming is just weird.

Sorry to hear about your fidh 8( Pleco's are cool fish, perhaps he gave you a nibble to say "hey, I'm still here and thanks for the squash".

Sounds like your pleco's not so shy anymore. I had a pair of 18 inch commons that would greet me when I came home, stick noses out of water for petting, and liked me to push pellets into their mouths, then hold em in with a thumb. He's just exploring your hands a bit. How many fish can you get this friendly with?

Yes, he does seem like he's turned from a shy guy/girl into a calm, cool, collected pleco as he cruises around the tank eating my plants. He's done this each time I've gone to the tank since the first time, he inches his was along the glass to my hand. What did you feed your common pleco's? Anything "meatier" then raw fruits and veggies, which is what he is getting now?

The furthest my sailfin plec will go is to stick his head out of his cave to see if I'm putting any courgette in the tank for him. The real characters though are the Callichthys, who come and sit on my hand when they're being fed a block of frozen food, and nibble my arms if I have to any tank maintenance- they certainly make gravel vac day a challenge! The hoplos also feed from my hands but haven't learned it takes less energy to sit on my hand yet.

Sorry for the loss of your oranda tenesseemom.

tennesseemom, common plecs are omnivores, they eat many different foods. Check out the sticky at the top of the page. Mine loved Tetra Tabimins, no petting or finger sucking but he'd roll his eyes (wink) to beg for them.
