ever since i evicted my xenia from my LR and started it growing on my glass (which it is, like a champ) it is not pulsing. for flow in the tank right now i'm still down to just my koralia 3 (in a 37g) since i still have my mj900 turned off (after it sucked up my nem) so there is quite a bit of water movement... BUT, it used to pulse with both pumps running when it was on the LR so i don't think it's because of the flow..? is there a reason that xenia doesn't pulse? i assume it's healthy since it's growing..? i miss seeing it pulse it's bumming me out a bit :(

I read somewhere that no one has any idea for sure why xenia pulses, what happens to make it stop, etc. I have no idea where I read that at, I remember in a book but no idea which of many books I have. or had.

I have 2 kinds on my glass. The pink pompom (which is pulsing but not growing) & the plain silver kind (which is not pulsing but growing like a weed).

did you try feeding the tank? Maybe it will start to pulse once it knows foods is in the water.

Doesn't matter, in my case.

I have heard the same as Mandy posted noone knows why it stops, also heard from some fellow reefers here it just wont survive in their tanks but grows like crazy in others. Luckily it grows ike a weed in mine and pulses but then I have been unsucessful with other corals that others say r easy...

Mine just started pulsing a month ago (and hasn't stopped) for the first time. It has been in my tank for about 9 months. Mine is not growing or splitting, but looks healthy and pulsing.

I would guess in the grand scheme of things, my tank is pretty 'dirty'. Nitrates and the like are always zero, but due to not skimming I would guess I have quite a bit of organics in my water. My xenia ALWAYS pulses, and has since the minute I put it in the tank.
I don't know if that helps, but I've heard of people who have totally pristine tanks and plenty of light having issues with the stuff.

i guess it's just wierd that it used to pulse and now it doesn't. i think it's just ticked off that it got ripped off the LR it was so happily taking over. i don't think my tank is that much less dirty than it used to be..? maybe it is, my nitrates used to be up around 20 and now they are down around 5... oh well i guess i should be happy that it's doing well and growing, i sure like how it looks on the glass, that one is thanks to you damon :)

Don't you guys think it's weird that 1 species doesn't grow but pulses & in the same tank another species grows like crazy but does not pulse at all? Gotta be something in that.
I read somewhere that no one has any idea for sure why xenia pulses, what happens to make it stop, etc. I have no idea where I read that at, I remember in a book but no idea which of many books I have. or had.
I've read and heard the same thing.
I don't know if that helps, but I've heard of people who have totally pristine tanks and plenty of light having issues with the stuff.
:)
I've not heard that about the lights, but I have heard that theory about overskimming.

So many contributing factors it is hard to say why really.

I too have heard about over skimming. I seem to recall, and I could be wrong, but I seem to recall a post here on AC somewhere about someone's skimmer busting and his Xenia actually started to grow more. Again, not sure where I read that, but I could have sworn it was here on AC.
Lets face it folks, Xenia doesn't really need an excuse to grow, pulse, etc. that stuff could grow almost anywhere. I just gave 4 stalks away to my brother-in-law over the weekend.

That is sweet, I guess it depends where you are, down here in Miami, the 3 or 4 LFS that I go to, they know me and they will by a frag or two every couple of months and that is about it, and they only give you about $5.00 for it and that is if it has 3 or 4 stalks. With gas prices these days driving around trying to practically donate Xenia just isn't worth it.
I just discovered over the weekend actually that a neighbor of mine just went out and bought a 55g to join the salty club! Turns out he liked seeing mine through my bay window and decided to jump in. Now I have another person to donate Xenia to. Although I am a bit worried that he is going to come over every day and ask me 10 questions though :uhoh: He is 14 years old. Nah, it will be cool though.

From what has been shared with me the xenia with either do what you said and grow like gangbusters...or they reefer will have no luck keeping it in their tank at all.

well i tried turning off the pump and feeding the xenia. a few hands waved but overall not very impressive results :( guess it's just not gonna do that for me anymore...
With the way it uses up nutrients I've considered putting any over growth I might experience with mine..into the fuge. Anyone ever tried that or heard of it?

I bet it is on strike and wants you to buy me a clam. I err mean you a clam...or do I?
that is the hardest post to read ever grins :)
I'm sorry lol, my head is spinning from that darn mafia game in general chat.
What I meant to say was that people trying to keep xenia seem to either have no luck at all keeping it....or they have it reproducing like mad. There doesn't seem to be much in between from what I've read and heard. That doesn't help with your pulsing question though. Sorry.

Maybe try "Starving" the tank a lil, I think xenia while easy to keep might be a lil harder to thrive, mine does not grow but is healthey and does pulse, maybe placement, lighting, water flow, nutrients, suppl. really DO take into affect... On the other hand my kenya tree grows like crazy Other people cant even keep it.
that is the hardest post to read ever grins :)
Yes grins All I see is the same yellow tang over and over and .....over :silly:
