Ok, I've been thinking of setting up an invert tank, and I've got this 10 gal just lying around. The Dark Green Shrimp looks good to me, and fairly easy to care for.

Potting soil substrate
Small whisper filter
10 gal heater
Light ballast..gotta check wattage, I may need a new one for plants
Planted with amazon sword, and whatever else I wanna pull out of my planted tanks. I have java moss for days, and lord knows what else thriving.

Here's my questions...

Will I be able to get a good population overbreeding a 10 gallon tank with Dark Greens? I like them as shrimp, neat to keep, but I also like them as feeders for other fish.

Will the light for a really healthy planted tank be too much for the shrimp?

If I need to, what's the best way to suppliment calcium in a planted tank?

If I need to have some shipped (most likely I will) should I wait untill winter ends and the weather is warmer? Or are they hardy travelers with heat packs?

Do I do a standard 20 percent water change per week as with fish tanks?

think they get about the same size as cherry shrimp. you can get 100 cherry shrimp into a 10 gal so it should be about the same.

i have a 65w over my shrimp tank and are fine. the plants help keep the water clean and they like that.

never added calcium before.

good shippers should offer heat packs. should be no problem shipping.

10% should be fine i do 50% water changes.

if you get over run ill buy some off you vs using them as feeders. you can use the money to buy them ghost shrimp..... lol

sounds like a great set-up, but you could just use a sponge filter if you wanted (less shrimp get stuck/trapped that way). I think that the calcium needs should easily be ablet o be managed through diet, the shrimp don't have as high of needs as snails. Unless your water is super soft you may not need to supplement the calcium at all. If you really want to buffer the water/add calcium you could make some homemade vacation feeders using either calcium pills (crushed) or plaster of paris. I had made a thread, but if you need more recipes please feel free to pm me. Good luck, can't wait to see the picks. Oh, and I too would love to take any surplus green shrimp off your hands!

I agree with using a sponge filter. I have one in my shrimp tank and it works great and the shrimp love picking over it for food.

It's roughly 10 shrimp per gallon so about 20 depending on how clean and aerated you can keep it.
