I'm thinking of getting some beef heart from a local butcher and was wondering if I'm supposed to cook it before feeding or to feed it raw?

I've been wondering that myself. You'd think raw would be healthier.

raw. try to get as much of those silvery skin/fat/veins whatever they are off before you feed it to your fish. i think i read its not good.

you can freeze it first so its easier to cut in small pieces.

Yeah, remove the silverskin/lining. If you have a meat grinder, grind up the heart (shades of Grimm's Fairy Tales!) and freeze that in cubes. It's a good treat food.

Yes, animal fat is..but beefheart is the exception because it contains almost no fat. Mammal protein is ok.

if you remove the external fat off the heart.

like most internal organs provides more nutrition.

Does anyone feed beef heart to angels?

actually many folks do feed beef heart to angels.

the mix of flake , beefheart , shrimp etc is a good mix for the carvinverous cichlids found in SA.

just remember to use moderation.

the issue with frozen is quality control or the lack there of.

many may not remove the fatty tissues

Buy the frozen beefheart cubes....so much easier and it is the same exact thing. One benefit to the butcher bought beefheart is that you can add supplements to it if you grind it yourself. good luck!

*edit* I've been feeding my discus the frozen stuff for around a year and they are doing great. Growing fast and they don't look fat. lol

I ended up getting the frozen cubes since it wasn't too expensive and I only have one oscar so it should last a while.. thanks for the input though!
