I am getting help on setting up my 5.5 gallon saltwater tank. I am either getting a breeding pair of ocellarus clowns or dwarf seahorses. Also he is getting me a bit of live rock for the tank, and will be using argonite rock.

How do you do water changes? Do you have to pre-mix saltwater before water changing? Also what is the main differences from salt to freshwater? I know the dwarf seahorses will be fine it in, but what about breeding pair of occellarus clowns? Also I don't think you can hook up a C02 in a salt water tank?

Is the person helping you set-up experienced with marine tanks? I'd do a bit more research before setting up either way. I'd not put 2 Ocellaris in a 5g tank. The dwarf seahorses would be a better choice but they are not a beginner species due to some of the specialized care they require.

My recommendation is that before getting the tank set-up you read, read, read. I highly recommend The Conscientious Marine Aquarist by Robert Fenner as well as reading sites like this one. Once you have a clear idea of how to cycle a tank and you know a general idea of what you'd like to stock in it then you can start the cycle and read some more, before getting your first fish or invert.

He has a lot of knowledge and is currently running his own saltwater tanks. Also helping me by picking the right filter to cycle my tank, and to suit my seahorses better. Stocking ideas is still up in the air though.

and a 5.5 gallon tank is no enviroment for 2 clowns. That is wayyyyyyyy too small. I want 2 clowns in my 10 gallon and I know that will be pushing it.

The tank was going to be seahorses OR ocellaris clowns. Originally I was going to use my spare 10 gallon for the clowns but now it is my shrimp tank and I have a spare 5.5 I bought yesterday to be my nano. But having read about dwarf seahorses I read they can be happy even in a 1 gallon tank so my 5.5 gallon should be more than enough. Thus my question was if ocellaris clowns would be fine in a 5.5 tank.

Also any salt water tips and tricks and basic information. The person helping me is my manager at my job at Petsmart, and is the Pet Care Manager, and soon to be running his own breeding shop. So he is very well qualified in helping me with this and is the one who kept on persuading me to start a saltwater tank.

And now I am still pondering that if I don't do the 5.5 salt water tank, I could keep it as a:

5.5 nano
HC,mosses
few small species fish
CO2.
panda corys

BUT, if a salt water tank:

first salt water tank and experience
ocellaris clowns or dwarf seahorses
live rock
and a whole new range of the fish hobby

I am just trying to weigh my decisions out and see what's the best course to take by hearing other people's opinions on each species and the saltwater hobby itself. N

Hey Darryl,

I'm going through the same "Dark-side" temptations and researching. There are ALOT of differences between FW & SW and I'm personally planning on doing a 55G FOWLR once I'm comfortable (probably in a few months). I'd definitely recommend that you read through Grins' Newbie blogs. They were a great jumpimng off point for me and provide a very good idea of what you're getting into. If you go a FW route with the 5.5 your only real fish choices are DPs or a Betta.

Back to reading... I'm done posting in this confusing salty world for now. :)

Well my manager said he will take care of me, ordering and telling me what to do and how to start it. I just wondered if anyone else on this forum had experience with the 2 species I am wondering about and salt tanks in general.

After reading this thread:

Not to be blunt, but it seems I will only get pep talk about them and not any information on them. If that made any sense...

So let's clear this up, I will have a very experienced person to help me with either ocellaris or dwarf seahorses.

And I would like if anyone else kept either one. I searched the forum and got minimal information as well as goggling. I will see if the other fish forum has anyone in their saltwater section ever kept them and compare information.

This one just scares me...

I understand your frustration, but everyone is just trying to put in their 2 cents. Of course, no one can physically force you to do anything.
Hopefully, my 2 cent can help you.

If you have mind set on the dwarf seahorses, then first would be trying to find a tank-BRED seahorse if possible.
tank-bred and tank-raised are two different things. If not tank-bred, then tank-raise will still be much better than wild-caught seahorses.

The most important thing is their diet. Most seahorses will eat nothing but live food, and with the limited choices within the hobby, live brine shrimp will simply not cut it.
Copepods are the best choice, however you need a dedicated refugium to keep a steady supply, which I'm not sure if you're willing to set one up. If not, then make sure the dwarf seahorse you get takes prepared food @ the petstore, and by prepared food, I mean a range of them to ensure balanced nutrition. If they don't eat @ the petstore, then don't purchase it.

Another important, can't-miss thing would be water current/water condition.
Seahorses needs a calm current with perfect water condition, while not always easy, it is possible to achieve it. Overstocking your tank with liverock, and powerheads placed strategically (and probably an adjustable valve to lower the output) are two of the things that can lead to that goal.

You will need to provide something for the seahorse to hold onto, whether it be macro-algae or simply plastic plants.

There is a lot more details, but hopefully this will give you a general idea of what it takes to keep a seahorse in an aquarium.
