my powerhead has been getting clogged up a lot because of algae in its tube, so after cleaning it today, i put a snail in the tube before setting the powerhead on top. so far the snail seems fine, but i want to know if you think it is cruel to the snail?

I think he did it to relieve the clogging from algae.

If you're getting algae up there, you're probably going to want to be a prefilter on the powerhead, such as a sponge. If the tubes still get build up, cleaning with a wire brush will alleviate things.

Yes, it is wrong. Are you talking the clear palstic tube that goes down to an undergravel plate?

snails manage to get into such places on their own. but a spot like that is trapping the snail in a spot with constant water flow, and no way for the snail to get to the surface if it wants to. i wouldn't do it. if not for the snail, at least for the consideration that shell bits in your impeller can equal bad times.

I wouldn't do it either. So, now if the snail dies, what are you going to do... provided you can't see it because it's not attached to the tube and is instead forcing the decaying throughout the tank?
