i've read a thread somewhere about the watts per gallon rule breaking down in larger tanks because light intensity decays with distance [tall tanks vs short tanks]. makes complete sense, but I guess my question is, how do you calculate the proper lighting. I have a 100 gallon tank that is 60 inches long x 24 inches wide x 17 inches tall. I currently have (4) 65 watt power compacts with phillips filaments inside [better output i believe]. any help would be appreciative.
