View Full Version : Internet fish
Ok I looked around and didn't see anything on this topic but I am sure I missed it. I live in Alabama and our fish selection in this town is pretty run of the mill. I have found a few sites on the internet that you can order some neat fish from http://www.***************** and http://www.somethingsphishy.com Is it a good idea to order fish or should I just buy what we have local? If it's ok to order are there any other sites?

There are quite a few sites out there that offer fish. The trouble tends to be that shipping is a bit expensive and drives up the per fish cost. If you know what you want, can't find it locally, and are willing to bear the added expense, it is a definitely a good idea. I've odered from www.liveaquaria.com (http://www.liveaquaria.com), sellers in the classifieds here, and several sellers on www.aquabid.com (http://www.aquabid.com). I'd also recommend that you look into your local aquaria clubs. They're a great way to network and find rarer fish.
Welcome to AC!

you may also want to check with your LFS to see if they will order a fish that you want for you.

Oh. I'm in Birmingham. I've experienced the same problem, but I found a great guy that has been able to get me anything that I've asked for so far. (except cherry shrimp cuz the guy is always out.)

I use on-line sellers/breeders often. Check our venders listed on here. Though shipping does add to the cost, I feel it is worth it to get what you want.

Ordering through an LFS is an excellent option and has worked well for me.
I've had mixed results buying live aquaria from private parties online, but have always had excellent experiences ordering from breeders I've gotten to know through the online forums. I've found it easy to pick out people with excellent reputations who are willing to share their knowledge as well as stock and have not been disappointed yet. That can be very important if the species is new to you and questions arise.
Lots of people report excellent experiences with aquabid, as was mentioned, also.
The shipping costs from the online sites can indeed be prohibitive and some require a minimum order amount, too, to keep costs down in general, so placing a small order may not be possible, depending on the cost of the fish. Also, while the fish are guaranteed on the sites I've visited, the shipping costs were not included. Still, lots of people report healthy, quality fish and good experiences in dealing with the companies. If you don't mind spending the money, it seems a reasonable way to go for that impossible to find fish.
