what causes it and how do I get rid of it? I seem to have an outbreak in 2 of my tanks. They are on the same light schedule. too much or not enough light?Does this cause it? what critter would eat the brown stuff?

Brown algae (diatom algae) is most influenced by high concentrations of silicates. Lower lighting levels also tend to correlate to them, however. If your tank is fairly young, expect them to hang around for a few weeks, then start to go away. You may also try some Otocinclus sp. or a bristlenose pleco to aid in their removal.

It is callled diatoms and is fairly common in new tank set ups. It is caused from the silicates in the aquarium glass that leech out into the water. It is one of the phases that your tank will go through as it matures. Even if you do nothing about it, it will go away on its own. In the meantime you can remove it manually or you may consider a trio of otos. Just remember they are happier and will play better if they are kept in a group of three or more. They will go to town on the brown algae but keep in mind, after the brown algae is gone you will have to suppliment thier diet with other food such as algae wafers and fresh zucchinni or they will starve to death.

every tank goes through brown algea as the others said.

i think you should just scrape it yourself for now until it stops coming back unless you are willing to supplement an algea-eating fish's diet.
