well, now that the cons have been evicted from the 75 about two months after the firemouths were evicted, my tank is looking pretty boring with just the jack dempsey and the 5 psychotic giant danios swimming around the top of the water 24-7 begging for food constantly and eating anything that moves...
anyways, I'd like to get another attractive fish to add to the tank, but Im having difficulty coming up with a good fish for this tank
2 of the giant danios are soon to be evicted to go in another tank with the convicts...
so my tank will have 1x3" Jack Dempsey and 3x2" Giant Danios
this is a standard 75g tank
any suggestions?
could I get an angel in there or will it get picked on too much?
Green Terror, Oscar, Salvini, Carpintis (not as aggressive as Texas cichlid), or a few that I can't think of right now. My brain is fried today :p
I have JD house with GT and Con right now. He is getting pretty well with the GT.

do you think that a 75g tank is big enough for an oscar and a JD?
I dont have plans to upgrade
if so, I'd love an oscar
edit: the JD is one of my fave fishes and he is the reason I bought the 75g tank...if the oscar will out grow/harass him, I better not get one...he is the focus of the tank
but if it will work, then I'd LOVE to have an oscar
I don't see any problem, but I'm sure someone find that a problem. It isn't like you have 2 JDs and 2 Oscar. It is just one JD and one Oscar.
Oscar gets to 12". As long as Oscar can be able to turn in that tank...shouldn't be a problem (in my opinion).
Your JD is 3" right now. So...he will get to 5" or 6" another 6 or 7 months? You have to consider the size of the Oscar carefully. Too small...will get bully or eaten. Too big...Oscar will take the JD whole. Saw that happened to my Mom's tank. That Oscar ate a fist that was only an inch smaller than him (fit in his mouth perfectly). Oscar grows fast too if it is being fed well. Within half year, my mom's oscar grew from 1.5" to 5" after eating a few of my mom's fancy gold fish and guppy (yum). Later...the 6" Oscar was moved to another 75 gallons tank...living with 12" arowana. And they were best buddies (both died 2 years later).

what's the fullgrown size on a JD?
also (I realise it's a typo, but it's funny) in your post, you said the oscar ate a fist...hehe...did they amputate at the wrist then?

bad behavior
the cons, when breeding have the mindset that they own the whole tank and my male is pretty big, he definitely dominates teh dempsey, and this time the fighting got out of control, so they are going into another tank by themselves (id never get rid of them, they have a lot of sent value)
the firemouths were just too much, they fought with the cons and with each other all the time (I think my pair of firemouths were the same sex)
I also realized I was flirting with disaster with a pair of cons, pair of firemouths, and a jack in a 75g tank, so I sold the fires

Hahaha...told you my brain is fried today...with all the queries running in my head. It is hard to think but all those codes. :p
Oscars get way bigger than twelve inches, I still think the combo of an oscar and JD is okay just filter the pejesus out of the tank. I have Oscar JD Blackbelt in a 90 with no problems (same footprint as a 75 a little more swimming room though). Other ideas are texas (carpintis) or motaguense maybe, might kill the JD though. Salvini and green terror were also good suggestions. How about geophagus brasiliensis or a red head earth eater?

thanks for all the advice, I got my oscar yesterday
the tank now has
1x3" JD
1x1.5" Oscar
3x2.5" Giant Danios
I might move the other 2 Giant Danios back into the 75, they're a little too big and anbnoying in the 20H
I might get some zebras for the 20H
do you think I'll be able to keep some more community based fish in the 75, perhaps some tetras
Tetras will end up fish food. Make sure and up your filtration, you should be moving 750 gph plus. The oscar will eat about anything that will fit in its mouth.
