Ok, so I was wondering how many people are in the same boat as I am.

Who here started in this hobby by thinking it would be cool to get some colorful saltwater fish and then progressed into reef and now is more interested in all the different types of corals and inverts that are out there than the actual 'fish' that got you interested in the hobby?

I sorta started the same way. They had a major sale at petco and I bought a $7 10G. I was going to do another freshwater tank and thought "Why not try a small saltwater tank? Those saltwater fish are pretty.". I went online to ask advice. At first, I was discouraged, everyone told me I should get a bigger tank (55G) since I am a newbie. But I was determined to setup a cheaper tank due to budget reasons (I wasn't going to spend over $500 on a hobby I might not even like). My nano was very successful, but it was a bit boring to watch only one fish swim with a bunch of plain rocks. My fish stocking was limited, but you can add lots of corals to 10G tank. So I moved onto reefs. I still love fishes though. They bring personality to a tank.

thats how it starts. one tank for fish. then you upgrade lighting and turn it into a reef tank. now you realize that some fish you want are not reef safe so you buy another tank for fish only. your reef tank starts doing well and you want to get a bigger variety of corals....so now you buy another tank to use as a frag / grow out tank. next thing you know you have a ick breakout in your tank and realize the importance of a qt tank or you bring home a coral infested with red bugs....now you set up 2 more tanks as qt's...one for fish and one for corals. soon you look around and you see tanks everywhere....but you always catch yourself looking for a bigger tank or room to add another tank. maybe for aggresive fish.

I don't have a SW tank yet but I've never thought the fish were cool. I've always said if I went SW it was for the corals and inverts.

Although, I have noticed that those that have planted freshwater tanks tend to start saltwater tanks because of the corals. I never got into planted tanks while I was into freshwater so that might explain why I was attracted to the fish first.

Same here I love the inverts. Its just so amazing that something like an anemone can be alive and so vibrant.
