I want to move my 66g tank to the living room, my dempsey doesnt like traffic at all so she certainly wouldnt like it in there. I want to get a cichlid a little more "out going", that doesnt mind some traffic. I was thinking of getting rid of my jack, and getting a red devil. From 10 - 12 inches seems about normal for maximum size, I want to hear how big some of yours have grown. The tank is 48"x16"x20" inches and the fish would most likely stay there for life.

Although it is 66 gallons (because it isn't so tall), your tank is large in the right dimensions (length and front-to-back) and I think would be able to support a Red Devil/Citrinellum.
Just make sure you have good filtration and do lots of water changes.

The tank has an aquaclear 500, and I think I may add a penguin 330 as well. I do a 14 - 20 (usually 20) gallon water change every other day on this tank.

I like the combo filtering. The Aquaclear should be fine by itself, but in the event of a malfunction or cleaning the Penguin 330, with the biowheels, will pick up the slack nicely.
Your water changes seem a little light, however. Not in frequency, but in volume. Do you have a Python, or are you doing this with buckets?
I would think that a 25% water change every other day sounds like more than enough.

In general, yes. But if you're trying to encourage growth on a juvenile, are overfeeding, you might want to change 40% or so. If you have a Python, of course, (as I hinted above). Of course, for that volume of water changing, you probably don't want chloramines in your local water system, either.

I dont have a python, I use a 2 gallon bucket. I could step it up to 30 gallons every 2 days, 40 gallons every 2 days, even 30 or 40 gallons every day, I dont mind doing water changes, I like the feeling of knowing Im giving my fish really good water to grow/live in. I have well water, so no chlorine or chloramines for me.

If you are using a bucket, and are still willing to do those kinds of water changes, you are a saint! However, you'd be vastly better off with a Python. Buy one on-line and your tank maintenance will be a breeze.

I had a python once. The adapter that came with it wouldnt fit on our taps, I got it jammed on once but we didnt to have enough water pressure to suck water out of the tank. I ended up trading it for an emperor 280.
Or if you don't want the python (my tanks are to far away from the sink and my wife would kill me if I ran 100 ft of hose through the house, something about the burbor blah blah blah;) ) you might want to invest three dollars in two five gallon buckets. I have one filling and one sucking, works well for me. I think they were 99 cents each at a local hardware store.

Heres the way I do it. I have a big rubbermaid container (I think it says it holds 28.8 gallons, but it really only holds about 20 or 21), I fill that (with the 2 gallon bucket) and when it gets to be within a degree or 2 of the tank water I change the water. Maybe I will "invest" in a 5 gallon bucket though.
Five gallons is a little lighter. But the fill and suck method won't work for you. I am usually doing two tanks at the same time if you are only doing one of course you can only suck and then fill. sorry.
BTW, I love your fish choice! I wish I could get one, but I have reached my spousal tank limit. Guess this thread shows who wears the pants. Good Luck!

I thought you were a guy :o. I always just assume that those who have cichlids are guys. :p
NO! Guess wrong. :D
I got into this hobby when I first got the Blood Parrots. I know most people don't like them because they are ugly and blah blah blah. I like them just because they are funny to look at. Because of them...I started to research on their breed. That lead me to Red Devil and Severums. Now I own 3 pairs of severums, Green, Gold, and Red Face.
Now I start collecting fish. One tank is peaceful with severums and BPs. The other tank is semi-aggressvie...for now.

My search for a red devil isnt going very good, none of the places around here have them. Anyone have a red devil that bullies all your fish or has out grown the tank? Send me a pm..
