So how does someone become a moderator? Is it by how many postings? How long they've been a member? Do you guys meet up or something?
Just wondering!

Being a moderator is not all about how many posts a person has, how long they have been a member or even to ammount of knowledge...although that does play some part.
Its mainly all about how a person is on the forums, how they interact with other members, how they help to deal with situations in a thread, provding good help...not letting things get personal or let personal feelings play a part in making a decision or carrying out action..
Ya and i you are one do you get paid?
No, we dont get paid. We do this for fun and enjoyment. Sometimes this is not seen by people, especially when there is an issue. We are volunteers here and accept the role of moderator when its presented to us because we WANT to do, not because we have too..
Personaly, i find it a joy and an honour to be first and foremost a member.. but also a member of staff here on AC, even though i've had my own downtimes, but, the good times far far out-weight to the bad. We have a huge member base here and its full of great members indeed, its the members who make a forum what it is, not really the staff, and thats why all of us members deserve a pat on the back for making Aquaria Central what it is today, and what it will be tomorrow..
Hope that helps
Niko

exactly what Niko said plus paypaling me some money usually helps. LOL
I've heard that if you PM Neo expressing that your favourite colour is red, he'll mod you... but if you say his name and turn around three times in front of a mirror he'll demote you to demi-member.

No, its not fun, nor will it ever be mate...In an ideal world, none of that would happen...
Editing, locking, deleting posts/threads is no fun at all, but unfortunatly, its ones of those things that has to be done sometimes..

Is that offensive to a mod? I didn't post it but didn't niko or dangerdoll or someone else say that mods don't take posts to feelings?
Not at all trying to pick on you, of course that was a demoting post and such, but I'm just really... I have no idea... picky I guess :grinyes:

we don't take sides which is of utmost importance, ILB, everyone has feelings when seemingly targeted, don't you agree? I think here, I know I am more wondering why being a mod equates to very low self-esteem. I thought I was fine... and wonder what would bring one to such a judgement.

I'd say that the fact they asked what it meant rather than reacting to it as many might shows that they didn't let their feelings get in the way.

I COMPLETELY understand, I just always need something to pick on :grinyes:
And I know that moderation is not low self esteem, I moderate other sites...
My question wasn't really answered :grinyes: That's ok.

I'm not sure if I said that "mod's don't take posts to feelings" but I certainly did try to clear the meaning of the statement up in my last post to the best of what I could make of it, ILB. What is it that you are unclear about?

one thing to keep in mind, and it's what i go by,... when judging a thread, don't take sides. put personal feelings aside, do what you have to do according to what the rules are.
and respect and treat others (mods and reg. users alike) with the same respect you'd expect from them.

I'm thinking you have to take some oath swearing you'll work long hours, take plenty of jabs, a nominal amount of abuse, and do it all for free.

For me, I didn't think it was a demoting post, ILB. I was just curious if he really thought Mods have low self esteem, or he forgot to put some smiley there to help set the content.
Since he is a Mod at another site, it would be somewhat odd to judge all of us like that unless he feels that way about himself or has some other meaning behind the statement. I actually thought it was kind of funny.

Sorry guys. My sick sense of humor asserting itself again. It was really meant as a joke. I was pulling a leg and it came off in my hand. As was pointed out, I'm a mod on another site, so it would point at me as much as anyone else had that been my intent. Thanks for the support, Susan. Again it was just a poor attempt at humor. Forgot the smiley, Bob...:grinyes:

I have a couple of questions about Mods and Moderating:
- how long do you have to be 'on-site'? I mean, is there a rota or something, do you have to sign up to being on for a min time each week or something?
- who is God Mod?. There must be a most Senior surely?
- what happen's when a Mod misbehaves?
- and who is the longest serving around here?...who started up AC and when?

oh and i'm not sure i saw the original quesiton answered:
- do you approach people to become a mod or do they approach you
- the criteria seem almost vague, are there behind the scenes discussions to talk about an application?

- how long do you have to be 'on-site'? I mean, is there a rota or something, do you have to sign up to being on for a min time each week or something?
<<There is no set time scale or anything like that. With regards to participation, obviously a certain ammount of time is good to be active on the forums>>
- who is God Mod?. There must be a most Senior surely?
<<Neoprodigy>>
- what happen's when a Mod misbehaves?
<<Moderators really just normal members who have extra access and duty's. All staff, as do members, have to abide by the Terms Of Service that we all agreed to when signing up to Aquaria Central>>
- and who is the longest serving around here?...who started up AC and when?
<<Neoprodigy started Aquaria Central, as you see it now, in August 08th 2006, previously, he was a member since early 2000>>
oh and i'm not sure i saw the original quesiton answered:
- do you approach people to become a mod or do they approach you
<<Your approached by a global moderator>>
- the criteria seem almost vague, are there behind the scenes discussions to talk about an application?
<<Yes, certainly :) >>

Bob does have his secrets....lol
To refernece the above concering time being on the board as well as applications, there are no applications, and the time on the board is looked at. Length of time being a member, amt of time spent on the forums, as well as participation in the forums and personal character on the forums. The later two of those holding a bit more importance than the time being a member, however all three go hand in hand.
The board is about ten years old, if my memory serves me correctly.
