White Cloud Minnows - Mouth Fungus Not Completely Gone After Using Melafix/Pimafix?

Hi guys,

I've had some problems with some white cloud minnows that I adopted from someone who allowed them to live in water that was the color of tree bark. Anyway, I've had 2 white clouds for about 4 months now, and I've dealt with a swim bladder scare and now, what appears to be mouth fungus.

One of the fish had a small white/grey fungal development on his lip and it got bigger within 2 days. So I got pimafix and melafix and have been using it for a little over 3 weeks now. For whatever reason, the fungus has decreased TREMENDOUSLY, yet you can still see it as a tiny speck on my fish's mouth.

I don't know what I should do. I've been wanting to get a 10 gallon tank (my tank right now is only 1 gallon, a starter tank) and move these 2 fish to that tank and get a whole new group of fish for them to hang out with, but, I'm scared if this fungus could be contagious to the others (if I buy them).

Should I keep using both mela and pimafix? Is it normal to use it for such a long period (almost a month)? I worried that the fungus could actually be some sort of bacterial infection so I purchased a pennicilin to use, but I don't want to use it unless I have to. Should I dump the water from this tank and start new (although this would ruin any n. cycles)? I'm scared since the tank is so tiny that all the chemicals can just OD the fish. Right now, the fungus fish seems fine, you wouldn't notice the mouth problem unless you were me (since I constantly check on them). The other fish seems perfectly normal as well (there are no signs of fungus on his body).

Thanks, and any tips would be greatly appreciated.

i would get the ten gallon and move the fish into it, when they are healthy add more fish. more water will be easier to keep clean to aid with healing. move all decorations, gravel, etc into the ten to help with seeding the cycle. the water holds very little bacteria if any at all.

If it were my tanks, i would keep them in the 1 gallon for a little longer and wait it out. Dosing a 10 gallon tank is gonna cost 10x more than dosing a 1 gallon, especially if you're using both melafix and pimafix. Also, it's easier on water changes. Im not sure what the recommended WC schedule is for pima and mela, but i'd do a 50% every 2-3 days while dosing.

While you are doing this you can always set up the 10 gallon in the meantime and maybe start fishless cycling it as well. There's a sticky on the top of this forum about how to fishless cycle i believe.

thanks guys. i actually am trying this penicillin and it seems like it might be working. its the gel-tek form that goes down in small little gel blobs and i only drop a couple in and the fish seem to eat it quickly then sort of back off. any other suggestions?

hopefully this will rid the tank's fungus. thanks.
