Have you tried the classified forum here? The shipping is very reasonable for what you get (mg, I CHOOSE YOU)! lol.

Try new world aquarium on east 28th st near 2nd and 3rd. Usually a good selection, but expensive.
Another place that sometimes is good is pacific aquarium on delencey near the williamsburg bridge
Fishtown USA in Bayside queens, on Northern BLVD had a large stock as well.
If u want to venture to brooklyn, let me know and ill give u some places.
Good luck.

Fishtown in New Jersey, not NY, (different owner), has a large selection of plants. Brooklyn zoo and aquarium sells lots of plants too.

Not a store, but a guy in NYC sells some great plants at decent prices and is very easy to work with. His name is Charley - you can find him on aquabid.com under the handle Lowcoaster. And if he doesn't have something, he can usually get it for you.

New World and Pacific are probably your best bets in the city for plants and oddballs, though they're probably the two most expensive places you'll find.
For the most common of plants (java fern, java moss, anacharis, etc), I sometimes goto Petco on Union Square.

definatly not looking for the common plants or fish. I placed 148 in ada contest for 2007. Killer was and it may sound conseted but i didn't put much effort into it so this year i'm going to give it my all and see what happens. what better then a labor of love to work hard on. if anyone has seen my post i have not used ferts in the past and well seems im not on the band wagon and i'm going to try the ferts this time around.

for oddball fish..
chinatown NYC...
Absolutely Fish in Clifton, NJ is nice.
I was just there this weekend. Picked up some glosso, glass shrimp and some angel fish. They have the best looking stuff around here hands down.
They are the only place where I have seen celestial pearl danios and mandarin shrimp and fresh water rays. There are other fish I'm not familiar with that I have never seen anywhere else but that's not really saying much. They had baby arros and a wide selection of discus. I didn't even get a chance to browse the salt water section which is also pretty big.

Another vote for Absolutely Fish. It's on rt 46 west, near where rt 3 and 46 intersect. Tanks are always well taken care of. Good selection too. Pricey, but you're saving money on shipping.
And Lowcoaster is a good guy as well. Shipping is cheap and fast, and he usually has a lot of good stuff.

Absolute Fish is a nice store, but be cautious. They charge about 3X the going rate for fish and supplies. I also got some sick fish and bad information.
I can't argue about the price... unfortunately they are the best store around for me. Do you have a better store you go to?

No I don't have a better store around. They are 1 of 5 that I go......sometimes after spending an afternoon looking for fish I come home with nothing.

I must say that Fishtown in Bayside Queens has a large selection. Pacific at Delancy has experienced staff and caters to smaller tanks. They have shrimp, and a large selection of salt water fish. There's also 2 places in Brooklyn that carries some puffers and discus. I find that the Brooklyn stores are generally cheaper.

Win aquarium on mott street is my favorite place. not always a great plant selection, but always something cool and (often young) to look at. and when he had them, I got my first few crystal reds there for a steal... and they've yielded nothing but gorgeous shrimp... some real S's and above. the guy at win claimed he couldn't keep them happy, so he stopped ordering them... too many deaths.... but I haven't lost many at all. must just be the water.
I think new world really has it for plants... Pacific has plants, but not usually anything I'd put in my tank. I got some BGA from them too that eventually led to the end of one of my tanks. Their shrimp are not usually very pretty, and are really pricey.
Also, the store in brooklyn on 65th and 8th ave, Tien Wei, fluctuates between really nice plants and out of stock... but there, I find they have a lot of BGA problems too, constantly taking a tank down, etc... and I've gotten a lot of bladder wort from plants from them. very cheap prices. Tien Wei was my favorite before I found Win.
GBUDD, you might want to look into Frank's Aquarium too. Really nice guy, somewhere in queens, not really a store, but he'd probably let you pick up if you were a serious buyer. He always has an awesome selection of small fish and inverts.
speaking of plants G, the plants you have dripping off your waterfall areas, the dark green vine/moss looking stuff... what is that?

I totally forgot about Win, awesome prices, very helpful owner there. Tien Wei I think has changed their name, but they are still there, also competetive in price. I think Win really is the definition of "Mom and Pop" store, as the owner and his wife, and sometimes the daughter runs the store.
I've bought almost all my planted supplies from them, including Red Cherry Shrimp. I didn't realize they had Chrystal Reds there at one point. They've been around forever.
I'll have to find out more about Frank's Aquarium, as I have not heard of him until recently.
