I got my new monitor today. :D Its the Gateway 24" 1920x1200 HD monitor. Vibrant colors, crisp images, and with 3ms response time, my fps's and basically anything I can throw at it look amazing. Running Crysis at 1920x1200 was amazing... never thought the game would look that good. I sold my old monitor, Samsung 204B (1600x1200 res) to my best friend for $225. Picked up the new one for $500 on sale at fry's electronics. Oh, and for those of you who really are tech savvy... this is for you. :-)

Rig specs:
AMD X2 6000+ CPU (dual core, 3.0ghz/core)
Abit KN9 SLI Motherboard
4GB Patriot DDR2 6400 RAM @ 4-4-4-12
2x Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 320mb graphics cards running in SLI
Thermaltake Toughpower 850 watt PSU
160GB Maxtor 7200 RPM Sata 3.0 main HDD
500GB Maxtor 7200 RPM Sata 3.0 storage HDD
Silverstone case (forgot the model number, its massive)

Bahahaha... no no no... the monitor was $500. :-P I built the pc a while ago... I've spent closer to $1300 on the tower, and $500 on the monitor. So for the whole package, $1800. :silly:

I'd love to have a $2k salt water tank... I'd have a gorgeous reef to watch. It'd probably pull me away from my computer time. :silly: I got my girlfriend into being a gamer, and for x-mas, I built her a new pc....

AMD X2 4600+ (2.4 ghz dual core)
Gigabyte SLI motherboard
2GB PC6400 ram
320GB WD Caviar HDD
Raidmax Sirius case
Geforce 8800GTS 512MB (she bought this one)
750 watt psu (she's buying this one today)

She can't wait to get her rig running... she got her new monitor from her dad for x-mas too. Samsung Syncmaster 204B. (1600x1200 native res)

Soon she won't be as envious of my pc. :silly::silly::silly::silly:

Generally they're in the same room. I have my pc in the other room for the time being because my gf and I have been staying up late gaming a lot, and its easier to fit a full size table in the rumpus room than it is to fit it in my bedroom with a fullsize desk, queen size bed, 2 bookshelves, a large dresser, and a 55g fish tank. :P

I'm planning a similar build in a couple of months.

I was originally thinking of a Core 2 Duo but lately have been leaning towards a Core 2 Quad, myself.

The quads are nice... the qx6600 is an inexpensive way to get a 3.0ghz quad core. (will clock to 3.2ghz on stock voltages and air cooling, but you'd want a different heatsink than comes with it stock) The only thing to bear in mind is what you will be using it for. Videogames are not being designed for multi-threaded computers yet, or rather, they are only just getting into being dual-core friendly. Most videogames will not take advantage of your quad core, but if you do video/audio editing, you will notice significant improvement in encoding times.

Much as Legendaryfrog pointed out in your thread... the Ultra isn't really worth the extra $200-$300 over a gtx. (this is just my opinion based on having used them minimally and having compared synthetic benchmarks... ultimately which one is worth it is up to you :D) Check out the new 8800GTS 512MB cards... they come with a higher clock speed than even the ultra, and are $360 brand new. SLI'd, they'd be blazing fast... and likely beat out a pair of ultras. My buddies and I unofficially recognize it as the 8900, to clear up confusion between the 320/640 and the new 512 mb S model of the 8800gt.

I myself am still an AMD fan, though they are being outdone by Intel presently. I'm hoping the new Phenom project isn't a total flop... would be nice to see real quad's made by AMD. Their focus now is more "power per watt" not just "raw power" and I believe that is why Intel is winning out right now... they just want "raw power."

The 850 watt Thermaltake Toughpower will definitely hold under 2 Ultras and basically anything else you can throw at it... VERY stable and reliable psu.

Good luck with your rig. You'll be glad you made the investment. :D

gatotsu77:

I partially understand why some of you folks are "into AMD" but years ago when AMD first cloned the 386 most of the billboards in Las Vegas as well as the large banners in the convention center during Comdex displayed "The Shot Heard Around The World".

It was really more like a "puff" as the chip depended on software numeric processing (ie. no hardware numeric coprocessor) and a bug in the AH emulated register precluded many mainstream applications from running on the chip.

I was originally thinking of a Core 2 Duo but lately have been leaning towards a Core 2 Quad, myself.

Slappy*McFish:

If you "really get comfortable" with the Intel Quad cores please let me know as I believe another very high end workstation will soon be required at the office.

Very nice... I seriously contemplated buying a 37" lcd 1080p instead of the Gateway FHD2400... but the contrast ratio, dot pitch, color, and portability of the 24" won me over. (I do lan parties every now and again... no way in HECK am I going to lug around a 37" hdtv...) The other issue it presented was I did not have adequate room to set up a work station so that I'd be able to use the computer for any lengthy duration without serious discomfort. Would have been nice... and hell of a lot nicer than my crummy 25" tv for movies, but with all of the drawbacks of getting the lcd tv, I decided against it for the time being. I can literally do everything that tv would have enabled me to do, and more, with my current monitor. I'd love to set it up on a lcd/plasma some time though... perhaps when its more economical. (College student = usually broke)

Edit: Hahaha... noticed one other thing. That particular pc, the older HP Pavilion series, is what I owned as my first desktop. No offense bro, but my pc would absolutely smoke yours :-P Again though, very nice setup on the plasma. Must be awesome for watching movies, playing games, and just overall entertainment at parties.
