I am in the process of setting up my first fresh water tank, and have questions about filtration. I have a 120gal. tank and want to use canister filters, but am not sure which route to go. I want to filter both ends of the tank because of the size, but dont know if i should use two seperate canisters or one large canister with dual intakes. Also, if i choose to use two canisters, will haveing two discharge nozzles faceing each other cause to much turbulence in the water ? Any recomendations would be greatly appreciated !!

I would go with at least 2 canisters. Put the suctions over about 1/4 of the way from either end, the discharges in the center, pointing to the corners.

But a lot of the placement, your decor and hardscaping can greatly affect the flow and circulation in the tank. Dead spots can be cured with powerheads or spray bars.

In a tank that big, the flow from two canisters will most likely not be an issue for most fish. Have you thought about using a sump?

I havent thiught about a sump at all . I have never set up a tank before, but i want to do things rite the first time . What benefit would a sump add, and are there any specific canisters that you would recommend ?

The sump adds extra volume. The large the volume, the easier parameters are to control, or at least differences in parameters don't affect the water overall as much.

It also allows you to hide all your equipment. You can put your heaters and filtration into the sump and only have intake and outlet tubes in the tank.

Were you planning on planted CO2? If so, a sump may not be a good choice as you will be putting CO2 into the tank and then having it come out of solution with the sump being open. In that case I'd go with two XP3 cannisters or equivalents from another brand.
