pump and powerhead maintenance, when to clean?

I have a eheim compact2000 for my sump return and a tunze 6025 powerhead (modded). I also have a Toms aqualifter to maintain the siphon in my cpr overflow. I am wondering when I need to clean these devices especially the return pump. The lfs has return pumps that look like they haven't been touched in yrs. Should I clean them monthly or every 6 months? I can't seem to find a rule of thumb to go by..

I try to clean mine at least every 3 months. With your aqua lifter I would check it about every 6-8 weeks, mainly the airline connection on the overflow

Mine are slated for maintenance at least every 6 months, but in situations like the airline hose that Archer said I'd recommend every 2 months minimum.

I just had an over flow on my tank because i waited too long to check my aqua lift
