how about a jewel, convict and a angelfish. would that be good or do u think it would turn out ugly, with all of them fighing??

for some reason I don't think the angel would be too "comfortable" in that living arrangement...rather small for all three, aggression will be increased and the angel will not come out on top.
A 29 is sometimes used for breeding pair of convicts.

yeah but i dont want a breeding pair. i would like 3-4 different fish and i just bought the jewel which i think looks very nice so i was wondering what else would go good.

Consider another jewel of a different sex or a bigger tank with bigger tank mates, as jewels can get very aggressive to smaller or similar sized fish and its own species of the same sex.

Rainbow Cichlids would probably be good in that size tank. I wanted Jewels, too, but then found out about their aggressive personalities. I was just lucky the girl at the fish store warned me instead of just selling it to me like most do.

u say it is aggresive but i have a paridise gourmie with it untill i get some more fish and i am goin to move it. and the jewel didnt show any aggresion to the pardise untill the pardise started attacking it but the pardise learned its lession and they are fine together now. p.s. sorry about the spelling

It could go either way, but your jewel and a convict would probably always fight (especially in a tank your size) and will definitely torment the firemouth. Both jewels and convicts need larger tank mates to keep the aggression down.

there are no certainties when it comes to compatibility but you have some good advice up above. My 2 cents? Don't get your heart set on the arrangement and be ready to make changes. What ever you end up doing, good luck!

im ready and how can u tell if it is a male or female convict doesnt one of the sexs have orange on the stomach?

Yea a female will have orange spots on its stomach and a shorter dorsal fin, but like someone in the other thread mentioned a young female or a male convict who have never spawned can change sexes (I have no personal experience with that).

You might try a cave if one fish needs a place to retreat.

yeah i have to rocks and the rocks have two holes in each of them but there is nothing like a cave with only one way in and one way out. i was thinking about getting a clay pot and maybe some rocks and create a something. u have any other ideas i could use to make a cave.i hope to have pics soon of my tank

Go outside and pick up a bunch of cobble stones, brush all the debris off and boil them for a few hours to kill all the bacteria, then you can either stack one on top of another in the tank or use an aquarium safe epoxy and glue the stones together making a cave of any size you want. Terra cotta pots also work, but river rocks/cobble stones or even slate look more natural and they're free.

Was nice and warm in Home Depot tonight when me and my wife went and got slate tiles for her 29g she is setting up for a pair of Convicts... We got 2 boxes of 4" slate tiles (9 tiles in as box) and then a box of 6" slate tiles (16 in a box) all for right at $25. We just randomly stacked them different ways until we got something we liked... ended up getting about 3 nice caves and it pretty much filled the biggest part of the tank.I had one of the 6" pieces left that I broke up and used to lay across the top to help breakup some of the stright lines. Here is a pic I just took ....Water is still alittle cloudy since we just filled it and I guess I didnt get the white gravel as clean as I thought I did.....
