buzzing light

I am starting my friends old aquarium, she gave me all the equiptment, everything seems fine except the light, it buzzes. Do I need just a new florescent lightbulb, or should I replace the whole hood?

Is it very loud or not too noticible? A little buzzing is normal.

I think its called the 'balance'.

Its a little cylinder next to the light somewhere.

Some of the new fluoros have it build in so you have to get the whole tube.

If it is real old, it may need a new bulb anyway. Why not replace it and if it stops buzzing, great. If not, then it probably needs a new ballast.
