After my last filter broke, I purchased an AquaClear 30 for my 20g. This is the first one I've run with activated charcoal, as well as the ceramic (I think?) beads and sponge. How frequently should I replace the components? I understand to do so staggered, but the instructions just suggest "as needed". I can guess, but I was looking for some feedback from those running the same or similar unit.

Thanks!

i have been running my ac30 for a year now and have never replaced either the sponge or the rings, i just rinse the sponge. I also don't run the carbon but put poly-fill on top. Carbon would need to be replaced regularly (i think every 2 weeks, but have never used but to remove meds so i am not sure).

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm not so fussed about continually replacing the carbon.. polyfill is a good idea for a replacement (though mine came with some bonus replacements in a sale). As for the rest, I've been doing as you and just rinsing. It's been up for about a month and a half now and I'm quite pleased with it.

just clean it. carbon is only active a week or two so if you want active carbon then switch it out then. best just to buy a big thing of it and get it over with. if you dont want to keep switching it out i would just take it out and replace it. polyfil is a good idea like msjinkzd said. you could also double up on sponge or bio media if you like.
