Hi all I am new to all this SW stuff I started reading the treads on 10 gal nano reefs over the past weeks, and I got hooked .( yea I know reading will get you in trouble all the time):help:

So I have a shopping list and a plan and would like some feedback.

Shopping List

5 lbs +/- Base Rock

15lbs +/- Live Rock what type fuji etc?

Sand for a 1-2” bed (live sand Y or N)

2small Maxi jet power heads ( I read that they were the brand of choice If not than which brand)

1) 50W heater I have a spare 100w could I use that or just get a 50W no big deal either way?

1 Hydrometer please suggest the best one?

1 SW test kit

1 Book clown fishes by Joyce D. Wilkerson this was recommended to me anyone have any thoughts on this book or a better one?

Anything you would recommend that I missed

If I understand all that I have read, Here is the plan what do you think?

I put the water in than the heater set at 82 then put in the base rock and LR so that it is stable and will not tip over. I then put the sand in around 2” deep. I cut up a piece of raw shrimp to start the cycle. Test the tank weekly? Wait 4 to 6 weeks and the tank should be cycled.

I plan on using a standard hood with 2 60 w equivalent compact florescent bulbs the Wal-Mart type till the tank is cycled. Then replace it with lighting that will support corals and an Anemone. With ultimately adding a clown fish and a goby .

Please give your thoughts on lighting for the final step.

Do I have the basics right? It just seems so simple or do you reefers have a secret hand shake or something?:grinyes:

Everything sounds great so far.

As for the cycling process, for everyone it is different, and depends on how much dead/decaying material the base rock you buy will bring with it...

My gf and I used cured live rock from the LFS and our cycle was about 4-5 days...

But i have heard of people using solely dead base rock and it can tanke many more weeks to cycle the tank...

I would test your tank every other day, and record your numbers so you can follow how your tank is doing!

I noticed you posted that you may want an anemone... I would really discourage an anemone in such a small tank... They really should be kept in nothing smaller than a well established (6-12mo. old) 30gal or larger tank...

Also maybe it is just my personal preference, but 82 degrees might be a little high... i would strive for around 78-80.

Everything else you mention is looking great!

The Advice to Newbies link in my signature has a shopping list for a few more ideas. The book you mentioned is a great one but I'd probably get a more general book like Fenner's The Conscientious Marine Aquarist if you're only going to get one. I also agree with Ooj about a 10g being much too small for most anemones and using 82 as a high mark in summer for the temp.
