I just got a 55g tank and stand from a house of smokers. I didn't notice it really while I was there but now that I have the stuff home and set up, I can smell the nauseating stench of smoke when I am standing about 2 feet away. Any ideas of what I should try wiping the stand down with to try to get rid of the smell? Alcohol? Clorox?

no joking, use dollar store brand of fabreez, i used it to get out deisel smell out if the trunk of my car and it works... just spray real good, and let dry.., just make sure you cover your tanks good so as not to get any in them..

dollar store huh, i would assume that walmart fabreeze would work equally well?

You could try washing the stand with soap and water, then wiping it down with vinegar, inside and out. This will cut the residual tar and resins and should get rid of a good portion of the smell. You can also put a couple plates of baking soda or activated charcoal (or both) inside the stand to absorb the odors.

If that doesn't work, probably the only thing that will help is time to air out and a well-ventilated room.

Good luck. I can't stand the smell of smoke, either. :yuck:

i would thinks so all i know is that is what i used and if you ever been around diesel you know you can't get rid of that smell.. so it can't hurt, dollar stores used to be $1 but who knows now?

Leave the stand in the garage for the weekend. You can clean it if you want to fill the tank sooner.

start smoking and you won't notice the smell anymore.

or you can use a cleaner with Ammonia as an ingredient, works well on my car windows to get the tar off.

I would use windex, dilute ammonia OR rubbing/denatured alcohol. Either should dissolve and clean the crud. may dissolve/soften the finish tho, try on a small area first. Some stands only have a light coat of clear on 'em anyway...

Once it's clean of all the tar...
A coat of spar varnish, polyurethane or even clear krylon will seal in any remaining smell...and looks good, too.
