I took a few pics today of the coral that i added yesterday... finally able to get a few pieces. i was told that these coral only needed good lighting in order to live... i have HQI, so that isn't a problem. what else do i need to do to allow them to flourish?

new additions in order as they were told to me:
1.green star polyps... haven't opened yet.
2.green uma
3.brain coral
4.sand urchin
5.???? some kind of leather, forgot what it is...

2.green uma Ricordea Yuma...and it looks bleached what kind of lighting was it under when you bought it?
3.brain coral not positive but it looks more like a donut coral (Cynarina sp.) to me.
4.sand urchin Hmm, not familiar with that name as a coral and the photo angle makes it difficult for me to ID
5.???? some kind of leather, forgot what it is...I'm not very good on IDing most leathers.

Most of these will be fine living off of proper lighting. You can also feed the tank some fine filtering coral food as well but I don't personally like to do that more than 2x a week.

I was thinking the brain is a Trachyphyllia

Could be, just looks more like Cynarina to me. In any event their care is pretty similiar.

Oh...that explains why it didn't like like a whisker, tongue, etc. to me.

Sand Anemone is one of those common names that isn't really helpful though as it gets used for carpet anemones, long tentacle anemons, tube anemones, etc. Although I don't feel it is a tube..could you take a shot from a different angle for us?

sure... i'm at work tonight but when i get home i will take a few more shots...
hopefully the green star polyps will be out by then.

the store where i bought the coral said that i need to dose iodine once a week (one drop per 25gal)... do i need to do this?

Dosing all depends on your current levels. Best bet is to get a test kit for iodine, see what your levels are and take it from there. I never dose!

If you do regular water changes, the Iodine levels should be right. Never dose anything without testing first. Iodine is required by many corals and inverts to grow at low levels. At high levels it can kill them.

thanks... i do 30% water changes every month so i'm sure my levels are good. I hope i can get the coral to grow.... i have been wanting to start a reef tank for a while now..!

The brain is definitely a trach. Keep it on the substrate in a low to medium flow area and it will be happy.

you may want to isolate the gsp... it has been known to spread like wildfire :)

here are a few quick ones... i hate the way the new HQI lights show all the scratches on my glass. I bought the tank used from a guy a couple of years ago and i think he used sandpaper to clean it or something...:headshake2:

Oh I love the sohal tang. and the corals and other fish, but sohals are one of my favorites that I can't have until I upgrade.
