I don't think it would be a problem, as long as the otos have enough algae to eat. If not, you may need to supplement their diet with boiled zucchini, algae wafers or even nori. If this is regarding the 5gal in your signature, you should definitely supplement their diet as a tank that size probably won't support 5 otos on its own.
k thankyou sploke. there is mild algae in the tank. 5.2wpg co2 and mild liq ferts. and i do add a hikari sinking algae disk every other day.
there super active and always roaming. i think they school better than my neons in my 55g!
i think they are doing a good job at algae keep down too. there bellies are always round and sticking out. and there always pooping. are they like plecos in that aspect? eat lil and poop alot?
but so there is a chance a oto can eat a cherry shrimp or baby? i hope not. cause then their outta there. i really wanna breed cherries. i have everything tailored to them in the 5g.
thankyou guys and gals for you future input, Justin
AFAIK - Otos don't generally eat shrimplets, but they may still pick one off on occasion.
Otos eat a lot & poop a lot - like Plecos & horses.
w/o supplemental food, you'd be hard pressed to grow enough algae for Otos using a 1/10gallon rule of thumb - they're very busy eaters. I have 4 in my 46g and I supplement w/ 2-3 algae wafers or some shrimp pellets every day (I also have 3 Corys & lots of snails scouring the bottom).
and the 5g is mildly covered in algae of diff sorts. and i said i fed algae disks just a few. but the tank isnt hospital clean. and there bellies are full?
but thanks for your input of you think or know of that they can eat only baby shirmpets.
Every tank is different. I have 4 chubby little Otos in my 46 bow and I don't need to supplement at all. What I do though is clean only the front and side glass leaving the back for the Otos to eat off of. They also have all the plastic plants, rocks and decorations to nibble on. My Otos seem utterly and totally disinterested in any food that goes into the tank.
i have ottos and cherry shrimp in a 46 bow with guppies and they do fine but the shrimp chase the otos out of caves, and off of wafers, i've got pushy shrimp,:headshake2: but really they are fine.. otos are the best fish..:grinyes:
