I had originally planned to go with silver dollars in my 55G, but have been reading that they are considered too big for this size of tank. Especially when going with more than 1 (I had planned to go with 3-5). So I am trying to figure out what other larger fish I can put in the 55G. So far my stock plan is likely to be:

12 - tetras (glowlights or rummy nose)
7 - cories (not sure on the exact type yet) and/or 2 bristle nose plecos

So what else can I add? If I add angelfish I can only get one, but would then need to look at different tetras as I don't want the glowlights to become angel food. If I were to get a pearl gourami what else (if anything) could I also add? I saw that someone had a green severum in their 55G with an Angel and some tetras. If I got a green severum (or similar sized cichild) and a single angel fish how many tetras and cories could I also keep in the tank?

Please bear in mind that I have soft acidic water (would like to try discus, but not yet experienced enough to try them). I realize fish can be acclimated to water conditions, but would prefer some that like this type of water.

Thanks.

Why can you only have 1 angel in that tank? I have 4 angels in my 46g, along with some small loaches and a rainbow shark. Everyone is happy and healthy.

I'd say you could get at least as many angels as I have. Just my 2 cents.

Only 1 angel as I don't want to run the risk of 2 pairing up and shrinking the tank.

Edit: I think I will leave out the silver dollars, sounds like they can be startled easily. 2 small children at home, and don't want to have them startled all day long.

you can house more than 1 angel. they may pair off but the 55 is large enough if you have enough driftwood in the tank or other structure.

they will establish a territory.

Cool, at the moment I am still setting up the tank but plan to add some driftwood. How many angels could I look to house? and with that number of angels how many tetras/cories?

I have 2 pair in a 55 that ia max for a 55 for angels. bottom dwellers don't seem to have anyh issues with them and the tetras I keep are easily able to stay out of the way.

So I could go with:

4 x angels
7 x cories
12 x larger tetras

And could I still add 1 or 2 bristlenose plecos to the mix?

That sounds like a good mix to me, pretty similar to my 55 actually (well was at one point, and will be again eventually).
