Plants and ammonia absorbtion

in my tank i rid excess ammonia by water changes. i dont like using carbon or anything that may deplete nutrients in my tank. maybe other ppl use it. just my 2 cents.

You shouldn't have any measurable amounts of ammonia. That means your tank isn't cycled or you are way overstocked. If you have measurable ammonia, do a 50% water change right away and continual 20% water changes until your ammonia levels go down.

Yeh things like AmmoLock are for people who cant be bothered to look after fish properly.

The water is still getting dirty, especially if you have plants. Water changes are the way my friend. (and cycling before fish!)

From what I understand Ammo-Lock will not remove ammonia from your tank. Ammo-lock and other like products will neutralize the ammonia, but not remove it. The ammonia is still present. The plants will still be able to use it. Some plants prefer NH3 and some like NH4. So the answer is a simple no.

I'm doing at least 25 percent changes daily. I use Ammolock mainly to detoxify the chlorines and chloramines before I change the water, so I was curious to see how that was going to affect my new plants. My apologies for not being more clear.

Should not cause any harm to plants.

Plants tend to get the bulk of their N from NO3 in aquariums.......unless the tank is really lean, lower light, non CO2.........no NH4 sediment sources etc.

So adding KNO3 etc of having decent filtration resolves any NH4 issues, it's extremely rare to measure any and only in the start up phase, or someone making the mistake of using Fishless cycling etc.

There is still some there, but it really low, beyond the accuracy resolution of any hobby test kit.

The Ammo lock etc simply bind the + end of NH4 and Bacteria finish the job slowly and it ends up plant food.
