filter floss acts like sponges. it looks like cotton. when its bunched together, it can let water through but blocks the debris. people say you can buy it at walmart because LFS filter floss is the same as the stuff you find in the craft section. for stuffing pillows + toys or whatever.

I think CB pretty much summed it up. It's very cheap, cost me like less than $2 for a bag with a descent amount in it.

Well, I would be suprised if the people at walmart had a clue about fish. Your better off just going to your LFS and getting some, or going to Big Al's Online (www.bigalsonline.com) for it.

You can find it at a "crafts store"...
It costs a lot less there than what you pay at the LFS. Floss is a 'must have' along with sponge(s) in your canister filter.

Even cheaper, try a fabric store.

I just purchased my filter floss at Wal-Mart. I paid six dollars for a five pound box. Every Wal-Mart around here has a crafts section. If the one you go to has one, just ask for pillow stuffing or polyester stuffing. Fish stores are total rip-offs, I only go there for things that I can't get at Wal-Mart.

I put some in my AC Mini HOB. I put it in in separate chunks. That way if it gets really bad I can swap it out a piece at a time. I don't think you want to replace it everytime as that would lead to a big loss of good bacteria. Mine has been in there for a few months now and I just rinse it out everytime I do a water change. Probably not as practical with a canister.

Make sure you get "polyester batting" and not "cotton/poly mix" because the cotton fiber content will rot. (But Dad's polyester leisure suit from 1974 is still in a landfill somewhere.)

Anyone who hesitates to buy a product that's not guaranteed "aquarium-safe" by a 'toon fish, might insist on "hypoallergenic all polyester batting."
