What will be the effect if i use a 300 watt filter for a 300 gal tank?
I'm trying to bring up the tanks temp to 28 Deg celcius. our room temperature is currently at 25Deg.
Will the 300 watt heater have any effect?
I boought 2 but sold 1. but now my tanks temp is a little low. so i'm forced to use the 1 left. will it have any effect?

thanks

hmm. there is a certain calculation to see how many watts per gallon your going to need, but i dont remember it off hand, but im SURE someone else here will.

But, i still don't think a 300 watt heater is going to be enough. Usually i hear 3 watts per gallon minimum. I like to use 5 WPG.

I am guessing that you meant to say heater instead of filter in the body or you entry. The general rule is 3-5 watts per gallon so you are way under powered. All of my tanks have more than enough heater so I have never experimented to see how it would work.

That said, I would guess that it may work, but you would have to have it turned up beyond 28 C and it may be running constantly. Aquarium heaters are designed to heat up and then shut down, I am not sure how well th heater would hold up running all the time.

May I ask what you are keeping? I would think that most fish would be just as fine in 25 deg vs 28.

thanks. I guess my fish really don't need a heater. i keep arowanas.
but its been raining the whole day that i'm a little worried the temp in the tank might be a little low.
but i live in a tropical country so this is the coldest it will be here :D
will just have th eheater in the tank for a few days. :D

thanks Lupin:)
I guess i made a huge water change because of ammonia in my tank . and the tap water is a little cold. so added a heater to try ti stabilize the temp :D

btw i'm planning to get another 3000 watt heater.
will it be better to put both in the main tank?
or 1 in the main tank and the other in the sump would be better?

I've only got 800W worth of heaters in my 240g+66g sump setup, so thats about 2.6wpg / 0.7wpl using advertised capacity. And my room is usually quite cool at mid 60 to upper 60's right now. Once I got the tank running it actually raised the ambient temp of the room several degrees to a little over 70. I've insulated the sump (except they are open top still) as well as the base and back of the display tank. I havent actually calculated it but it looks like the heaters run probably 2/3 of the time. I might try see what another 400W will do to the run time of the heaters, but I dont want to push the limits of the circuit.
