I have a fiddler crab (smaller brown in color with one very large claw) in my freshwater (some salt has been added) tank. I got to thinking... Does he ever need air or can he live underwater for his whole life? If he does need air, how do I provide this? Tank is 36g that is filled up about one inch from top.

i dont know much about crabs, but what i have read in here previously they all need some kind of land to crawl on to as some crabs will spend about 70 percent of there time on land.

am sure theres more ppl here with better info and in site to keeping crabs.

Fiddler crabs live on mostly on land, in your setup, they'd simply drown.

Well thats nice to know. I am slowly killing a great crab.... What to do? Should I take him to the nearby river and release him or what?

NEVER RELEASE ANIMALS IN THE WILD! Many species have been outlawed or become extinct do to this.

But there are fiddle crabs all over the river banks a bit south of me.... If this guy is going to die I feel I must do something. I mean I can't just let him drown, can I?

Oh no I am not sure of that.. Honestly that is a point I never considered. I would have no clue as to what species any of them are and I wouldn't take that guess either. I am really upset that I am essentially killing a beautiful animal. If I took him back to the store where I purchased him, he would just suffer the same fate, just somewhere else. Oh well, I could always chalk it up to beginners ignorance but I will still be sad. :(

They have 5g aquariums for cheap, just add substrate on one side, and add tank water. I would set up a loop to the main tank. There is definitely a better way, But I just can't think of it.

Yea, I can't be the first person to find this out after the purchase, but there again I should have done a bit of reading before I bought him. By setting up a loop to the main tank, you mean what exactly? A sort of joining of the two tanks?
