I am really confused on how to make a sump. Ive been to like a million sites and seen many people show how to make one but i still have questions.
I plan to buy a 75 gallon tank. I would like to make a sump for it so that i can house all the things on the sump and keep them off the display tank. I want to house the sump underneath the tank. This sounds simple but i have been looking and i don't think it is as simple as predicted.

Can i make the sump out of a glass tank or does it have to be acrylic?

If anyone could explain how to make one in their own words and maybe show examples of one, I'd much appreciate it.:help:

A refugium is generally something used in saltwater sumps. In freshwater sumps, some people incude a veggie filter area for nitrate reduction, but its not necessary.

The first thing you need to figure out is how you're going to get water down to the sump. If you haven't bought the tank yet, you have the option of buying a drilled tank, or you can use a regular tank and buy a hang-on-back overflow box. I use several of these with good success.

Next is sump design. You can use anything that will hold water for a sump. Rubbermaid tubs make great economical options with some bracing. A 40gal breeder tank would also probably fit well underneath a 75.

Next, you figure out what kind of filtration you want. Wet/dry trickle filters are probably the most commonly used in FW sumps, and are probably the cheapest/easiest option if you're not injecting CO2 for a planted tank, depending on how handy you are. I built a w/d that runs about 500gal worth of fishtanks for less than $50.
