Hi, I have tried (my first attempt at it) to create a paludarium to keep my betta in. I was hoping someone could help me with substrate. The tank is a twenty tall. I created a false bottom component that coves roughly eighty percent of the tank and I will leave the other twenty percent as a "pond" area for the betta. I plan on putting Terra Lite ontop of the false bottom for more drainage, but I do not know what to use for a substrate for the plants. I have done some research online and came across some really good stuff. I just am not sure what would be safe for the fish side of things. Thank you for the help.

Bedabeast/eco earth are both good substrates. what kind of animal is going in there? tree frogs cant have deep water if thats what you were considering. any pics?

The tank will have plants and fish. Sorry no frogs or other reptiles/amphibians. Are the two substrates you listed safe for the fish?

the substrates for the land plants and the aquatic plants will likely need to be different... I don't know too much about bedabeast/eco earth but I suspect they aren't ideal for aquatic use (maybe they float or foul the water). Popular aquatic substrates for plants are things like Eco Complete or Flourish or ADA soil or a mixture of various stuff...

maybe I misread this whole thing...

I do not think you misread, I just was not too clear. The plant substrate will not be used as an aquatic substrate. Just the was the tank is set up and with circlation there will have to be some interaction between the land plant subsrate and the water that is going into the "pool" area. I want to know what will be safe to use.

ahhhhhh I see. My hunch is that anything that is organic or free of ferts would probably be safe but things like peat (it seems a lot of viv substrates have peat or other materials that may produce tannic acid) can color the water and lower the pH. Not really a bad thing, just something to consider...
